tommorichards
My trace combo started making a farting sound recently, so i diagnosed the problem to a tear in the surround. So im not too sure what to do now. Should i contact trace about a replacement even though its about 15 years old, or get a new driver, in which case, what am i looking for? Any help is appreciated. icastle
You could replace the driver, but it's probably repairable using Copydex and tissue paper...
tommorichards
whats that when im trying to google its meaning?
icastle
Copydex is a rubber based adhesive - more flexible than PVA. You cut (or tear) a piece of tissue paper to fit over the split and use Copydex to glue it into place. Put a couple of layers of Copydex and tissue on both sides of the cone and you get a flexible rubber 'patch' which'll seal off the split and stop the farting. Lfalex v1.1
Crack it open! Have a look at the driver - Odds on it's a Celestion unit. Many Trace cabs/combos sport such drivers. Have a dig around the 'net/enquire at Trace Elliot to find out exactly what was used, and see if either Trace (or more likely) Celestion can source you a replacement. Alternatively, scour the 'net for similar combos with knackered amp stages, and see if you can get a new driver that way? Just some ideas... tommorichards
it is a celestion unit ct15-150. Ill have a check with trace about it. i may also have a go at the copydex thing, but the tear is right at the seam, so its a bit awkward. Thanks for the suggestions. Lfalex v1.1
So a 150w 15" driver? As used in a 1153 and associated combos? (IIRC the 1158 had a higher rated unit) Shouldn't be too hard to find, or too expensive (hopefully!)
