lukeward2004 Posted April 15, 2008 Posted April 15, 2008 Hi All, Ive just been sat here in awe of this guy - great execution, great tone, great playing, great tune and it just gets better as you listen. This guy is mental, I only wish my playing came close to this as he tears a fantastic Ben Harper track up with his skills. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bX9C96zwYfQ...ted&search= enjoy! Quote
Mikey D Posted April 15, 2008 Posted April 15, 2008 It's all about Juan Nelson. I had to learn this when I was teaching a guy years ago as he "HAD" to know it and couldn't work it out by himself. Lovely, lovely bass part. Quote
The Funk Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 (edited) After watching that clip I clicked on one of the related ones - now I'm in love. Edited April 16, 2008 by The Funk Quote
GreeneKing Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Mmmmmm... So that's what the top horn is for Quote
3V17C Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 yeah Lydia's clips are all pretty cool peace c Quote
alexclaber Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 I really need to buy some Ben Harper - Juan Nelson is one bad mofo! Huge Larry Graham influence clear during that solo but that's never a bad thing... Alex Quote
OutToPlayJazz Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Re. the original video... An excellent copyist with great technique! Lovely sound as well from that JV Squier! I'm surprised some of you haven't discovered Lydia yet. Her L42 tribute "Heathrow" is very good as well. Favourite Lydia vid? Lydia on bass 5. You'll see why straight away! Hot Tub Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008
Hi All, Ive just been sat here in awe of this guy - ..... enjoy!
Veri nice! Thanks for posting this. Just a litle thing, but that string bend at 2:08 blew me away. Sad, innit? Quote
lowhand_mike Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 i feel like packin it in after those two clips, jeez, brill. cant even talk and play let alone sing and play and then she does slap stuff too. and her voice is cool too. not fair Quote
paul h Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 I personally blame Stefano for my, and I would guess a lot of other peoples, Yamaha BB GAS after his Jamiroquai (sp?) videos surfaced. Definitely one of youtubes stars. And Lydia just makes it all look so effortless...very cool. Paul. Quote
Longmayyourun Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Lydia........ thank you guys for making my day. And I only came in for a cup of coffee...... Quote
lukeward2004 Posted April 16, 2008 Author Posted April 16, 2008 Lydia is cool, ive checked out her band a few times - she is very talented, her playing is fantastic and she managed to get that "Mark King" vibe down very well! Quote
chardbass Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Stefano was the first YouTube poster I saw who made me sit up and listen- it was his Space Cowboy rendition that had all you describe. If you like this kind of playing MarloweDK is another regular poster who isn't a chop-merchant but plays some really nice bass. lowhand_mike Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 i try not to look at some of these guys cos i get depressed but then found this guy, he says these are lessons, yeah right, impressive none the less. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4HnTSYvJWc...feature=related and then this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8w_-LHByZPM&NR=1 Quote
Count Bassy Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Very impressed by the original link, but I'm afraid that neither Lydia nor her bass playing do much for me. Clive Quote

alexclaber Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008
cant even talk and play let alone sing and play
I can sing and play but I can't talk and play, that's much harder! The hardest things to sing and play are not the impressive slap lines, 16th note fingerfunk or weird chordal things but the simpler countermelodic basslines with space and syncopations - reggae lines are particularly evil. Cantdosleepy Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Great videos, thanks guys! That first one is ace! Quote

lukeward2004 Posted April 16, 2008 Author Posted April 16, 2008 Ive been playing some more today after being inspired by these vids, just playing along to some Chic and Sister Sledge, and it would appear my playing requires quite a bit of work! You know when you have those days when the brain is willing but the fingers arent? Thats me today. I only hope that one day i can be a tenth as good as these guys are! Quote
niceguyhomer Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Fantastic Luke - makes we wanna go back to guitar ...not Quote
Oscar South Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Don't really like his EQ, otherwise good. Quote
