soopercrip
Thanks very much for the welcome. I will keep an eye out as I'm so delighted with the ultra gorgeous bass I bought via this forum . I've not picked up a bass for 20 odd years (prev played a double bass) so I'm now well and truly hooked once again. (The practice exercises in the "Teach Yourself" book and DVD are flippin awful!) I've borrowed two amps (a Laney RB3 and an old Fender) so I'm spoiled for choice but want to get something sorted pretty quickly. Many thanks once again
Welcome Deb, I'm wading my way through Scott Devine's video lessons at the moment, receive one a week by email www.scottsbasslessons.com worth a look. Scott is a member on here. ...and the GK combo just adds to the confusion.... Andy
debwilliams
Thanks for the heads up on the email lessons - I'll def take a look. There was a slight accident here last night, the glass shelf on my tv unit shattered. Might be time to adjust the volume when I'm practising , I did have a laugh though . I might get some face to face lessons, think it's a good way to start after such a long break. Sure is a minefield looking for amps (especially when they can cause domestic devastation!) soopercrip
I had to be careful with my GK rig, had ornaments leaping from sideboards when I cranked it up a bit There are plenty of people on here willing to tutor you depending on where you are Deb, start a thread asking for lessons. I'm sure it wouldn't take long to find someone, Andy

dannybuoy
Look out for a used Ampeg Micro VR stack? Runs at just under £500 new so should come under £400 used. Loud enough to gig with also, especially if you add the 2nd cab:

Blowupsexcat
Just got an Ashdown 550 Touring 1x15 combo which is amazing! The dual tube preamp really nails it and the 15 is both deep and punchy as hell.

Budgetneil
Hi Deb, Following on from Blowupsexcat's post, I've recently bought the 220 Touring 115 combo which I'm mightily pleased with. Slightly less potential for structural damage than with the 550 but same tube preamp and some majorly hefty discounts about too. debwilliams
Hi Neil Thanks very much for your input. I've finally made a decision AND placed an order at last! I decided not to go with GK as most of the stuff I listen to doesn't have the GK kind of tone so I've decided to get an Ashdown. I couldn't decide which so I called them and they were very helpful. Given my budget (wanted to spend £250 max), the fact that a warranty was important to me plus I wanted to be able to use the amp should I want to gig in the future the suggested that one I'd seen on the Thomann website would be ideal. It's one of their MAG combos that Thomann bought in bulk so has been given a different model number. This is it http://www.thomann.d...own_t15250s.htm I appreciate I've lost out on the lightweight advantage of the GK MB112 but I'm happy with my decision (so far!) so all I now need to so get the amp delivered and to be able to play like Guy Pratt once I get plugged in . Hope you are delighted with your choice - enjoy Many thanks once again Deb Edited May 3, 2012 by debwilliams
xgsjx
Looks like a good buy & you can add another cab if you need to for gigs. One thing that seems to be a bit misleading is "2 parallel speaker outputs - to use with 2x 8 ohms bass cabinets or 1x 4 ohms bass cabinet". I believe this would only be the case if you are to disconnect the internal speaker (which is probably 8Ω) as I don't think the amp will run at 2Ω. So when you are adding a cab, do check in the manual what it will take to save overheating.
soopercrip
Nice choice Deb, and good value. Still undecided myself. Too many options I think and they just keep coming Last time I ordered anything large from Thomann it took less than a week and the comms from the carrier were excellent. Cannot fault them at all in terms of emails acknowledging my order and letting me know item has been despatched (in record time). Hope you get yourself the bargain of the year very soon XGSJX - Wow, bit too techy for me! When I spoke to Ashdown they did say that I could add a cab but I have absolutely idea about the other stuff you've added. This is where I need guidance from you guys. At the moment my audience comprises of a jack russell and a greyhound so I don't think I need to be worrying too much about larger gigs for a quite some time .I'll give you a shout when my moment in the sun arrives Thanks again . dmccombe7
Small and compact with gig-user status and a really decent sound to boot i would certainly look at the Promethean. Heard one at a Moffat Bass Bash and it was quite an impressive little amp. Dave Edited May 3, 2012 by dmccombe7
leftybassman392
I have a PJB Fightcase that I'm thinking of selling. It looks like this: http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/PJB_Flightcase.html Small, very light, and it's pretty much unmarked and is a top notch piece of kit (superb for recording). 150w should be plenty in a home setting, and if you need more power they do a 250w powered cab. It has a protective cover. I'd be looking for £400. I'm left-handed but there'd be no issues with swapping it back. If you're interested let me know. HazBeen
I have a Gallien Krueger MB210, didn't expect it but I am really happy with it. And you can add a cab to achieve full 500 watts at 4ohms. Light as.. too

My guess is that that text comes from the description of the separate head. With these combos however, there's no worrying. They work just as separates. The internal 8Ω speaker is not internally connected, but just connected to one of the two sockets on the back of the amp. Normally one would just plug one extra 8Ω cab into the other socket, and run at 4Ω that way. Deb, if you do decide to add a cab, just make sure it's rated 8Ω. Ashdown build both 4Ω and 8Ω, and they are clearly marked as such. best, bert
debwilliams
Thanks again - I will most definitely be back to ask for guidance if I do decide to add anything to this combo which Thomann have have promised to deliver on Tuesday . Mornats
I've ordered from Thomann a few times Deb and the delivery's been fine. Hopefully you should have you amp by now so let us know what you think. I bought an Ashdown 220 Touring combo at the weekend love it to bits. Gigged it in the park at the weekend (first gig in 17 years for me) and it had buckets of volume. So much so that it drowned out the PA a bit but hey, you can never have too much bass IMO
debwilliams
The amp arrived in pretty good time considering the Bank Holiday (grrrrrrr ) and I LOVE IT . Just a little confusion though, I amp I ordered was the Ashdown I mentioned above http://www.thomann.d...own_t15250s.htm but when it arrived, the tag on the amp read " MAG 300 EVO II Bass Combo" . I'm not complaining of course ..... I am definitely happy with my choice. Glad you're happy with yours too, hope the rain stayed away for your audience to appreciate your amazing sound
Mornats
Hmm, I wonder if they've sent you one of these instead: http://www.thomann.de/gb/ashdown_magc115300.htm. If so, you've just saved yourself £90 and got yourself an extra bit of power! The MAG 300s are pretty good amps (I did try one, but the warm tube sound from the Touring amp just really did it for me). Does yours have the compressor on? I think that's another difference between the two and the only useful thing that the 220 Touring didn't have. Or it could be that the Thomann amp is a version of the MAG 300 combo but without the compressor. Either way, it should be a great amp! Yes, the rain stayed away just enough to get a few people watching thanks!
debwilliams
Thanks for your reply -it does say that it has a built in compressor.. When I called Ashdown just before ordering I mentioned that I was considering the amp I ordered or the Mini Stack. The guy I spoke to discussed both types and said that Thomann had bought in bulk some of their MAG combos. What I didn't expect to receive was an amp that reads T15-250S Limited Edition on the front yet still has its original MAG 300 labelling tied to the top. I've played again today and messed around with different settings and love this amp so no matter what it's called, I love the sound and price. Nice one Thomann / Ashdown - happy days indeed
