Coilte Posted April 26, 2012 Posted April 26, 2012 Nice bass !! Two questions, does this have a jazz width ( 1.5" @ the nut) neck, and what type of pick ups are on it ? Thanks.
dr Szelma Posted April 26, 2012 Author Posted April 26, 2012 cheers mate 1) it's proper precision bass, lawsuit fender copy so - no, I'm affraid, 2) it's Grant's original, but if you're worried about the quality of it you're more than welcome to pop in and compare with my Fender Original pickup - I can assure you, this one is very decent, strong output and very rich sound, there's no need to replace it with something else...
Al Heeley Posted April 26, 2012 Posted April 26, 2012 so why the sale? If its so great and better than all those others, why not hang on to it, or are you in a financial squeeze? I've always so regretted parting with any beloved instrument I've sold...
dr Szelma Posted April 27, 2012 Author Posted April 27, 2012 Well, you're 100% right! I'm going to regret selling this bass, but what else can I do...? That's life for you, isn't it? anyway - bump
andy67 Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 (edited) hiya, can you explain the lawsuit bit some more please? If I'm right these are early 80's, my era and, although my local music shop sold them (Grants Music - sadly no more!) I can't recall the lawsuit - its got me really intrigued?? Most likely I'm just getting old! andy Edited April 27, 2012 by andy67
gjones Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 Ah yes I remember my Grant bass. I bought it secondhand in 1979 for £50. If I knew that 33 years later it would be worth so much I never would have thrown it in that skip in 1984.

Mark McK. . [/quote] I thought the term 'lawsuit' referred to Gibson and Fender suing companies from the far east for making unlicensed copies of their designs? For example the old Tokais and Fernandes were identical to vintage Fenders and Gibsons end even had headstock logos based on those of the companies they were ripping off. I didn't think lawsuit referred to instruments that were just good instruments?

I used to think Rock 'n' Roll was Chuck Berry and the Beatles, but apparently, these days. it also applies to over-made-up, half naked slags getting pissed-up and stupid, falling out of Brown's at 5.30 in the morning. vax2002 Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 (edited) I think the Grant precisions were re-branded Sumbro basses as in summerfield Brothers made at Fuji Gen Japan. They were heavy, but terrific quality instruments for the money. Edited May 2, 2012 by vax2002
gjones Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 (edited) They were imported by James Grant in Edinburgh in the 70s early 80s and given the name of his music shop. I bought mine in 79 because I was a spotty 16 year old with no money and it was the cheapest bass in the shop. If only I'd known it would one day become a collectors item I would have covered it in cellophane and stored it in a temperature controlled vault at the bank for the last 33 years as an investment for my retirement.
