ME-50B & Ashdown ABM

Hello, first time poster here. Just bought an ME-50B to add some interesting effects to my sound. I've never entertained effects pedals before hence I'm not too sure exactly the best way to set up. Should I still plug the guitar directly into my ABM500 with the ME-50B running through the effects loop at the back, or should I plug my bass into the pedal and line this out into the instrument input of my ABM?

THis depends, to a certain extent, how much of the ABM's overdrive you use.
Effects such as reverb, delay and chorus usually sound much better after and overdrive/distortion. And compressors usually sound better before distortion. So if you are using the ABM's overdrive then wherever you put the ME50 will be a compromise.
I'd expect your best bet would be to use no, or minimal, overdrive from the ABM and simply plug the ME50's output into the normal bass input on the amp. You can then simply use the ME50 as a pre-amp/effects unit providing all your effects and/or overdrive/distortions into the (clean) ABM. There's no harm in using the ABM's powerful EQ to tweak things though.
Of course, there is no harm whatsoever in trying the ME50 in the amp's FX loop instead. You will not harm anything. You may or may not like it better in the loop. THere's also a chance that it may have more or less background noise in the loop.
Just try it out both ways and see which one you like !
Oh, also be aware that plugging it into the FX loop may bypass the master volume (depending on the design of the amp). If so, it will be very loud, unless you start with the ME50's output set low. The ME50's output volume would then become your master volume.

Thanks guys, I put all that to good use gigging last night. I went the direct route ignoring the fx loop I turned off the overdrive and compression on the amp and cranked up the distortion through the ME50B. The sound was superb, I could hear every note played, the tone was everything I wanted. Really impressed, thanks for the advice.
