Happy Jack
I recently bought a very old P-bass, which came to me with Fender flatwounds. I replaced those with La Bella FL's which are rather lighter gauge, and the A and D strings both rattle slightly in the nut. It's far more noticeable unplugged than amplified, and it's hardly a significant issue, but I'd like to do something about it. Granted that I really do not want to replace the nut, are there any quick & simple fixes for this? BigRedX
For the A string I'd have said more break angle. However you can't really change the break angle of the D string. Maybe the strings are moving sideways in the nut slots? Fill the slots with something and recut?
Mr. Foxen
As per other thread, fill the slot in with white powder of choice, and recut: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/174693-odd-temporary-nut-repair-but-it-worked/
KiOgon
You can coat the sides of the slots with a 2 part epoxy like Araldite, when dry run correct size file through, job's a good'n
Happy Jack
I'm strangely attracted by Dom's utterly minimalist approach: ... but I've super glued bit's of paper into over filed slots before. After you've trimmed off any excess with a razor blade the repair is invisible ...

OldG
Another option - loosen strings and lay a strip of PTFE tape (or as many strips as needed) on the nut, under the strings and tune to pitch.... carefully cut of any excess. Saves wasting good rizla Edited April 27, 2012 by OldG
