I am partial to a bit of flamenco music from time to time. Always makes me think of balmy summer evenings and some wonderful holidays in Andalucia. Thought I'd post a couple of clips for your delectation - first off the wonderful Paco De Lucia with Entre Dos Aguas and then the younger generation superstar Vicente Amigo (thanks to Nigel/silddx for pointing me in his direction). Enjoy - absolutely wonderful as far as I'm concerned :)

Visiting Seville in the autumn.

I'm jealous! If you haven't been there before the gardens of the Alcazar are wonderful and there's several great flamenco venues. Touristy I know, but a horse-driven buggy trip round the old centre is fab!

Mrs ET is on a course with her Spanish flamenco teacher so I'm hoping to see some non-touristy stuff as well as the Alcazar. :D

Great thing about flamenco is that everyone is sort of aware of it, and are sort of aware its quite hard to play, but most haven't listened very hard. So if you have the fairly basic bassist ability to play quite fast with fingers, and do a phrygian run up and down one string of any nylon strung guitar about (one string so you don't even have to tuned it) people think you are dead good.

Love Flamenco, ever since seeing Paco De Lucia with Al Di Meola and John McLaughlin at the Albert Hall.

This is really odd - Flamenco/Rock/Leonard Cohen hybrid but I love it:

A favourite of mine; TOmatito playing Armonías Del Romañé. Carles Benavent on bass (the godfather of flamenco bass). There is a whole movement called Nuevo Flamenco that fuses flamenco with other genres (some of the stuff already posted is actually Nuevo Flamenco not traditional flamenco). The secret if 'if it's got electric bass in it, it is probably nuevo flamenco'!! Flamenco is afusion of North African, Indian and Europeam music and is, ironically, given its complexity, a dance music first and foremost. In traditional flamenco, the most important element is the dance, then the cantador (singer) and the music comes in third.

Some great stuff posted in this thread.
Carles Benavent is Bassist i like to listen to a lot. His Fretless playing is sublime.

A nice track here with Josemi Carmona.

Saw some once in a tiny club in Jerez whilst there on a work trip.
Don't think my colleagues really appreciated the skill/ability required, but I did.
Excellent musical form.

And home to guitar players that recognise the importance of timing ;)

I LOVE Flamenco. Favourite dancers are Christina Hoyos and Antonio Gades:

Favourite composer/guitarist is Manola Sanlucar:

His stuff is slightly more jazzy than the usual

I saw a jaw-dropping show in a Madrid club back in 2006 that had me in tears. I would recommend anyone to go and see Flamenco live in a proper club for the total experience. I prefer the dancing with the music and not the music on it's own. Also, I don't like to hear bass guitars in this kind of music.

Not seen him before. Interesting style of play (I watched some YT clips last night). Only time I can recall seeing anyone play a fretless with a pick. Being the bass nerd I was intrigued by his unsual looking fretted bass with the big cutout on the upper bout - turns out its a Jerzy Drozd 'Barcelona', designed for him by the Spanish luthier http://www.jerzydrozdbasses.com/barcelona_views.htm

Something fairly traditional by Juan Martin, part of the Four Martins tour a few years ago. I went to see them during this tour and it was indeed a fabulous gig. They took it in turns earlier in the day to do a mini-masterclass at which they spoke a little about their approaches and methods. What a guitarfest!

The other Martins were Carthy, Simpson and Taylor in case anybody's interested.

Yep, he is a terrific player.
Never seen him mentioned on Basschat, until now.
Heard him on a gig in Paris a while back - he was outstanding.

Good post.
