OK. Time for some new porn that has just been delivered to it's new owner. (The guy I bought my 4 string Rumour off!) - This example is loaded with single coils.

This is actually walnut(!). Crazy top or what!?

I have had the honour of playing this bass and tis a peach! I've always wanted a GB - I have owned a couple of lovely Nightingale basses (kind of related to GB!) in the past but I'd love a Spitfire!

Amazing bass.

Have you got any recordings of you playing that beast?!

Preferably showing the different pickup configs?

Dick the Boffin solders up each one by hand and makes sure they are just perfect.
Bernies Basses can be among the best looking instruments i've ever seen.... I do sometimes wonder about the complexity of the electronics, I guess my concern is how much of the tone comes from the circuit ? I guess I like to feel that the tone from my instrument comes from my fingers and the wood.

Can I ask you GB boys what the build time is for one of Bernies instruments these days ?
GB fans. Got a little treat for you here. It's the first review of the 4 and 5 string Rumours at the start of what we now know as GB. I'm sure it'll tickle your fancy :)

I haven't seen these reviews for some time and they are certainly not on the net anywhere (to my knowledge) so I scanned it and made it available for everybody.

Enjoy.
I've got that review somewhere. Always loved that 5-er, looks fab.
He has quite a full order book so it would be best to speak to the man. His estimates can be a little short :) Rumours take longer cos he likes to leave the laminated necks to settle before he shapes them, whilst a plain spitfire with a one piece body is just 3 bits of wood.

As for the tone my two GB's with Bernies circuit sound very different so I guess the circuit is not colouring the sound. My other GB with a P Pup and EBS actives sounds different again.
In addition to what chubbyboybass says, I think that a great deal of the signature GB sounds comes from the circuit and pickup. Having said that, all 3 of my basses do sound different to each other - particularly the Spitfire and the Rumours - but all exhibit that GB personality. Sparkly highs, strong tight bass... they all work for me. The difference in the construction and the wood are indeed factors in the sounds of these instruments. Certainly I would say that the circuit doesn't impede the natural tone of the instrument - in fact I would say that there are more usable tones (including some that just can't be got from other basses) in these basses than anything else that I have played. I used to think that that the circuit was responsible for all of the sounds you got but now I am more sure that it's not just the circuit. It's the package. You won't be disappointed.

It may be worth pointing out that all the circuits in chubby's basses are different. His Spitfire has the original split PCB circuit whereas all Bernie's basses now come with what is known as the Rumour circuit.

Bernie's estimates are sometimes short and certainly, he does have a lot of orders on the board... but his work is first class and you will be thrilled with the final product if you decided to take that route.

Hello!
My name's Roman and I'm new to this blog/chat thing, so if I offend anyone with the incorrect chat etiquette, I apologise in advance. I'm a Brit who's been living in the US for around 18 years and I have one of the early, original Goodfellows that I got in '85 or so. It has no serial number (unless it's hidden under the neck where it meets the body). It has been sitting in my closet for about a dozen years now, as I have had a sponsorship with another small bass company here in the US called US Masters. (here's a link if anyone's interested http://usmasters.com/bassgallery.htm)
I'm trying to find out what my Goodfellow is worth as I would like to sell it. It's a great instrument and deserves to be played. Any help that you can offer would be most appreciated.

Here are some photos

Cheers,

Roman

It certainly looks like a pre Lowden Goodfellow to me.. and quite a nice one.

As for finding a buyer...

http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=50227

As for the value, it depends on the buyer and how much they are willing to spend! As this looks to be an original by Bernie himself, that immediately makes it more desireable. I have seen these go between 700 and 1000 UK pounds and looking at the condition of this one, assuming that there isn't a hideous amount of bucklerash, you should be looking at selling towards the higher figure. The bass gallery in camden had a fretless for sale at around 800 pounds. I don't know what it went for in the end, but it wasn't as nice as your example.

Thanks very much for the info! I'll post this on the marketplace but I'm not sure I'll sell it at this point. It's probably worth keeping rather than selling it at the going prices you quoted.

Hi Roman

Very nice bass ... Did you ever use it back the at a place in London called Prime Time, a rehearsal studio near London Bridge?

Saw one like it there years ago and the guy who owned it was also called Roman and he played in a band called 'Raising Cain' if I recall correctly? Hence the reason for asking!

Anyway, good luck with it...

Yes indeed.. I'm the same Roman. Did we ever meet? I haven't heard the name Raising Cain in a long time! I used this bass on most of the sessions did there in the 80's. I now work with a different company in the US, called US Masters ( the link is in the previous posting) and I really love their basses (and guitars actually) It took a lot for me to change basses as I played the Goodfellow for well over 15 years.

Hi Roman

Cool and yes, we did meet! You were friends with Paul Barber who worked there for Nick & Ian and I was in a band with Paul (Kickback) and he was our drummer.. I was the bass player of course..

I saw your band quite a few times and always enjoyed your playing a lot, as did Paul! Last I heard, Paul moved to Brisbane Australia in the early 90's...

Those were the days! :)

No updates for a while, so I thought I would chuck this one from the archives out in the open. A bit different this one... not prizes as to why.

Loads of builds on at the moment so there should be some fresh untapped porn in the forthcoming months...

I played that one back in around '94 when Bernie was still working in West Croydon, and was still operating under his own name (before he started using the GB name) - he used to sign his headstocks in silver pen instead of putting a logo on. Lovely, lovely bass. The Bartolinis sounded great with his circuit (Bernie and Dick were still working on their own pickups at the time), and that myrtle burl top looks far better in person. Only thing I didn't like about it was the neck - it was wider at the nut than a Precision and a bit too chunky for my taste.

OK, just got back from Brighton - and it's been an interesting two days.

Jeff Beck is in town... and so on Tuesday, me and the man dropped off some EBS gear into a rehearsal studio in London for a certain well known bass playing lady. Saw the new GB van - it's a sleek, black, mean machine (I'll get a photo up here if anybody is interested - you won't miss that thing with all the GB logos on it!). Anyway, the traffic in London is a nightmare... glad I'm not based there!

Today, the crew are playing their first gig of the tour at the Dome in Brighton. Sell out crowd - and I know that a certain Jimmy Page and Gary Moore were there. (Sorry Jimmy for nearly taking you out when getting out of my car). Brum tomorrow... we'll have to see what that brings.

Anyway, just a short note to say that Tal Wilkenfeld has taken delivery of her new GB Spitfire 4... and you know what...? She loves it... (She thought the lights of my Rumour 5 were a laugh too!)

...that's enough for now, I need my sleep!

Stay tuned campers :)
