Is that the one Mark King used for the Ohne Filter show or is it just built to the exact same specs??
It's very similar but there are differences, like the neck is rock maple rather than figured, the sratchplate is single-ply and it has the standard elephant-ear tuners that GB's seem to have rather than Schaller type ones.

I bought it from the Bass Centre at the same time I bought the Warwick Streamer V - a very expensive afternoon! The guys were doing the px and paperwork on the Warwick so I went off for a play...and found the GB in a corner. Plugged it in and the rest, as they say, is history!

I only realised it was close to MK's bass after my mate, who worked for Yamaha at the time, had been to some rehearsal studio in North London several months later to deliver a few bits 'n bobs to a band there. Turned out that the band was L42 (the stuff was for Lyndon Connah) and MK was playing his blue GB!!

According to Bernie, it was one of a very small handful of basses that he produced for retail at that time. I suppose to get the GB name out there at the time MK started using them and boost custom orders.
What I can tell you is that it's an earlier example due to two things... a) the control layout - it has the Standard/original Spitfire 4 in a line electronics as opposed to the Rumour electronics
Not necessarily true! (although I think it is in this case) - my GB IV (2006 custom build) has Rumour electronics coupled to the original/Jazz style control layout (at my request) as I prefer the look of the 'in-line' layout on the Spitfires, but that's the beauty of having a custom build - you get exactly want you want!!

Will do shortly. I'm out of the country at the moment so as soon as I get back, I'll put a close up of the logo up.

Love that inlay!!Does it have a particular significance? When i first saw it it reminded me of that Level 42 lady!!I think i may go for my initials in old English script on my Rumour.Very nice.Ps is that MOP?

Cheers Ebs, thats a nice touch and i guess all these nice touches add up to the price you intimated to me.......wowsa dont take it out of the house. I gig my gb regularly now, as its the only bass I have, and whilst they are mighty pretty to keep polishing, in my opinion they are designed to gig and play, so they are bound to pick up knocks, However heartbreaking that may be!. I wonder if a worn and mojoed GB would gain in value ala a worn jazz et al? now theres a question.

OK - the lady inlay is actually derived from the picture of a lady that Bernie saw that originally inspired the shape of his original basses. You can see the outline of the bum quite clearly. I seem to recall (but I could be wrong) that it was from a sun cream bottle or something along those lines. The swimsuit straps form the horns of the bass. That particular detail is a decal - I'm sure anybody wanting a Rumour can request that it is included on their bass!

I'm out playing 3 or 4 times a week so all my basses see quite a lot of action - as you say, they are defo for playing. For those compact stages and "high risk" gigs, I take my Lakland DJ5. If you are careful, you can keep your basses looking good - it's just those gigs where space is compact and there is a risk of bashing that increases the chances of damage I guess!

Good tip - I just bought a 5 string KSD jazz bass from Bernie and that was my train of thought. A "cheaper" bass for gigs where there could be a risk of damage and save the Rumour, when I finally get it, for better/safer gigs.

I also thought that it made sense to have a 5 string as my back up option rather than a 4 string so that at least I have the extended range for the tracks that need it. Having said that re-learning songs on a 5 string has not been a 2 minute job. The string spacing still seems to be catching me out!

Am giving serious thought to getting this GB here (depending on price and money), opinions anyone? I really like the sound of GB's from what i've heard and i'm looking to get a bass which sounds like the Bacchus that I used to own (which had bartolini soap bars). Looks like that has bart pickups but can't tell 100%. If anyone has some spitfire soundclips that would be great. Even better would be somone near liverpool who has one and wouldn't mind me having a play :)

The GB website doesn't appear to be working at the moment either.

There are some seriously nice basses in this thread, it's actually making me consider selling both of my basses and having one of these made. Only problem is, I can't find any pricing information anywhere! Help?
As each bass is bespoke the only way to get a price is to speak to Bernie. Solid colours are cheaper than fancy woods. Mine were £1800 and £1500 but that was a few years ago.
As far as what I'd like goes, that Daphne Blue one a page back pretty much fits the bill perfectly! Perhaps with a matching headstock and maple board.

I think the best thing for me to do would be to get a second hand one and see what they're like first. If I like it, I can always sell it on and place a custom order :) So if there's anyone in Liverpool or Staffordshire (I visit there a fair bit) who has one for sale let me know
Tried emailing GB today for a quote but my email immediatley bounced :)
email is -
<old email removed> (I don't think the [email protected] one works... yet... UPDATE - it does!)

probably to best to phone to discuss details of a bass build though!

As for seeing one (or quite a few!), pop yourself along to www.bassday.co.uk, stands 2g and 2h. Hey, it's closer than Brighton!
