Re the Merlin bass - WOW, Bernie's woodwork is some of the best in the world. How amazing all the laminates and finishes come together. If I had a single cut, I would always look more at the back than the front!

The black one does look more 'complete' to the eye, it's probably exactly the same shape, but the part where the arm rests at the top/back of the body looks less prominent. Seems to help the shape, but that part of the design makes it really comfy to play being a bit more extended on his original designs. Good to see him looking well and turning out amazing look basses as always.

My GB Standard / Spitfire Prototype N. 001 is up for sale, I just do not play enough anymore, too many basses and too little time... All the details and pics in the "For Sale" section of BassChat.

Thanks

Images do not do justice to the beauty of this...

This has been sitting in it's case under my bed for so long I'd forgotten how gorgeous it is...looks like it's going to have to come out again soon..

So it has!... Still coming to terms with the Merlin! The design looks better than the Warwick and the Ibanez SC's, but the Foderas have it. In contrast Bernie's super-J Spitfire looks better than most other basses period! IMHO

The Merlin feels great when you play it. I don't know about SCs on the whole buy certainly being behind the wheel so to speak, its a lovely instrument to play. The Spitfire though... well, I love mine :P

To expand on the Chris Holton's request... let me put this "out there"...

If anyone cares to try a 4-string Spitfire and you're in Canada or the USA...and heading to Ottawa, Ontario, arrangements can be made.

Hit me here with a PM and we'll make it happen.

Here's Bernie with my bass before sending it to Canada.

Cheers,

I thought it about time that I shared some pictures of the GB Merlin that Bernie is building for me.

Top wood with the body sandwich .................. mmmmmmm sandwich

Next , you just chop up a bit of wood you find lying around into long straight bits....

Slap a bit of glue on it and squash it all together........

Stick a bit of birdseye maple on top ,

Whack some frets into it ............
and with a few minutes sanding you end up with a neck.......

a tiny bit more shaping.....

and BOOM !!

A Merlin ..........

The bass is currently at the spray shop being [s]painted pink[/s] lacquered :)

I spoke to Bernie today who said that he is undecided if GB Guitars will be attending the 2016 London Bass Guitar show.
