I've just seen the latest on the GB Facebook page. I love it but Bernie won't sell it! He says he wants to keep this one for trade shows :(

I forget what beautiful basses Bernie builds - want another but I know that, like the last one I had, it would just live in it's case....far too lovely to put at risk of damage.

Whack it out and use it. The first ding is like a dagger to your heart then your Bernie turns into a road warrior and earns its scars. Had to do that my Spitfire which as been unceremoniously rammed into doors, lights and subjected to several random forceable jack intrusions. If it acquires too many scars, take back to Bernie for first-aid. Build the mojo..........

Hi,

This is my 'new to me' 2005-ish Spitfire 5er. It has a maple top, snakewood fingerboard, bound neck and an ash body.  It's been played quite a bit over the years, but the frets are in pretty good shape and the body is in good order overall, with just a few minor dings and some play wear on the Hipshot bridge. Hardware was changed from gold to black at some point and bass came with the original Schaller bridge and tuners. Anyone know this bass? has it passed through your hands? I'm interested to know a bit more about it's history.

It came with a very low setup - 1.6mm at the 17th fret  on the 'B', which is a bit too much for my heavy hands. It played cleanly all the way up and down the neck. I'm still getting it dialled in to my liking but so far I'm loving the way it feels and sounds. The pickups have a very clean and extended treble response, which puts my playing uder the microscope... going to have to up my game!

Cheers,

Alex

I love my Rumour and can't ever imagine selling it. I was wondering about getting a Spitfire 4, how does this compare for sound and playability?

I bought a Spitfire shortly after getting my Rumour and had both at the same time.

They are two completely different beasts - different feel, tonal package, balance - I'd try to borrow a Spitfire before diving in.

I’d disagree. The Rumour and Spitfire are very similar beasts... especially if you get a neck through Spitfire. The main difference is visual and construction I would say - there’s a lot more laminates involved in a typical Rumour than Spitfire.

As Bernie said to me, “you could put my preamp and pickups on a table, string it up and it’ll sound GB - bit of a **** to play mind”

Some hardcore GB porn... EBS_Freak - you referenced a through-neck Spitfire so here we go with a cross-over to Jon Shuker who set-it up with the strings underneath the frets as John Entwistle would have it. (I would have gone to Bernie of course but I'm 300 miles from him and it's just over the Derbyshire hills to Jon.)

That’s lush -  Bernie’s work is unreal -  not found a bass that would ever want me parting with my 4 string rumour

Here's to that comment.

I have two Spitfires and a couple of Goodfellow (Player and Classic) basses. I don't have a Rumour yet though...........now, there's a thought!!

I think you could get it cheaper than that.  To me it’s worth that money all day long when you compare it to fodera and Alembic etc which is crazy money.  This bass plays like a dream- got one virtually identical otherwise would snap it up .
