Laurence for example, is at the complete other end of the spectum - virtually no treble whatsoever... and for what it's worth, all of Mark's GBs had dark necks because GBs are supposed to be bright GBs are slap monsters though...! Opinions and discussions are good! If we were all the same, the world would be a boring place. You're right - it is a nice day... and I'm going to go to the pub in a bit and get some scran. Big fat burger I think.
guess it must be me thats not bright then!

Gunsfreddy2003
Yeah I know it's such a stress because you want it to be right as it is not every day that someone builds a guitar for you and you just want to get it right! Out of the pics that I posted I must admit that I have preferred the black american walnut with the maple neck only because it has a uniform look to it. The other wood (which I think is English walnut) is lovely but I do worry that the heavy black figuring in the middle would always detract from the rest of the bass. As I said before I think that Gabbie is the dogs dangly bits and I think that the black american walnut is going to get me much closer to that look. Did you have to go through a lot of choices to get to Gabbie or was it a one shot see it and loved it job? Mark
The decisions, the decisions!! EBS_freak
Tricky decision and as you say, it's important to get it right. The BA Walnut is always a pretty choice to have but it's not every day that you get pretty patterned English Walnut like that. The most exotic I've seen is Bernie's own Angel bass, but apart from that, I don't think I can recall anything quite like the example you have there. It's got some interesting features in it and what looks to be a little bit of spalting at the back which is a nice touch. What's hard to remember is that when these things are polished, they look very different again. The colours go a lot richer in a colour and the grain and features really pop. If you are going for the Gabbie look, then yeah, it has to be the first piece of wood... but it you look at my Rumour closely - particularly at the one which is now on the GB site... do you really reckon that would work as well with maple? I'm not so sure. Your eyes may tell you differently. This is coming from a maple fan by the way... Whatever you chose, it will look beautiful. The pieces of wood that Bernie gets hold of are exceptional. If it doesn't pass Bernie's quality gate, it doesn't get used. My original conversation with Bernie about Gabbie was shortly after picking up my Spitfire. It started as an exercise in building the most rediculous Rumour possible. Outrageous woods - hence the flame sides, magnetic battery compartments, LEDs of course, front and back headstock laminates, mother of pearl inlays, ebonised wood detail... and it just went from there. I think we both pretty knew what it was going to turn out like. It brought with it many challenges (for Bernie) - like how to route it for the cables to the battery compartment, the LEDs, where the headstock logo should go etc... they are all in new positions and various things had to be done throughout the build to make sure it would all piece together - although it is a Rumour, its far from being a standard Rumour build. Again, I put trust in Bernie's judgement - it's as much his baby as mine! bass_ferret
Another two options you have got are: Not show the neck laminates of the tru neck by having the facings over the complete front and not just the wings. Stain the body part of the neck to give a contrast to the maple fingerboard.

Gunsfreddy2003
Thats where I am coming from guys - the beauty of both Gabbie and your Spitfire is that they are fantastic basses to play but also look very pleasing to the eye! The English walnut might just be a little to outstanding! Think that no matter what I am going to go with a maple fingerboard! Ferret has a couple of good ideas which I will talk through with Bernie next week. I think that Mike's idea to buy both was great but sadly the lottery numbers did not come in last night. Ultimately I can't wait to join the "club" I am using a KSD 5 string at the mo which Bernie put the EBS preamp into and when gigging I have to switch back to my Warwick fora couple of numbers and the sound from that is pathetic in contrast - such a weak signal and no depth of tone. Can only imagine what the Rumour is going to sound like against both of these basses - Bring it on!!!! P.
Thank you, i was really lucky to hit on her as she wasnt a commissioned order from me but a chance email to Bernie asking what he had in stock as id always fancied one, and he came up with this one which was built for a show I believe, and was amazingly pretty much what i would have commissioned anyway, i may have added a matching headstock, dont know if that can be done retrospectively? he doesnt carry any stock usually just ordered basses, so i was fortunate, the rest is history, deal was done and i didnt have to wait 6 months. Ive said to the wife, "never let me sell her" but another really vintage jazz has come up and i may have to pawn the wife or the GB or both probably. Gunsfreddy2003
Hi, Yes had a good long chat with Bernie last Friday and I have decided to go with the black american walnut and a dark fingerboard which I think is some kind of ebony but looks fantastic!
