mrtcat Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 I f###ing hate that song with a passion but I concede that with most of the pork in the pubs/clubs/parties we play it would go down well. Suck it up. Quote
Bilbo Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 Yes, its toe curlingly sh*t. it is on my list of no-nos, not because Marc Almond is gay but because the song is total boll***s. It has one redeeming feature. It ends eventually. Quote
RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 Played deeply dippy by right said Fred , a nd I will survive( complete with full randy roads type solo) .also Delilah (Tom jones). All good. Nearly did rivers of Babylon , but only mr drums agreed , so it got shelved. Do it ! Quote

mrdirtyrob Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012
It's a cracking pop record that tons of people know and like, don't see why you wouldn't throw it in a set. If any assumed status as a 'homosexual anthem' or the fact that the most well known rendition of it was sung by an outwardly gay bloke is putting anyone in your band off playing it then I wouldn't say the problem was in the audience.
This. Quote
mep Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 (edited) We do a blasting version of Tainted Love and it's one of the best covers in our set!! We are a guitar based band with no keyboards in sight. We have based our version on the Prozac+ cover which you all need to check out. The guitar riff in the intro sets it off. It's not as gloomy as the Marylin Manson version either. Forget the original, except for emphasing the 2 beats before 'get away' & 'run away'. I play around with the bassline whuich uses triads and inversions. Use a pick as this song can rock out, honestly. We have recorded this for our CD which is almost ready. If it was I would make the mp3 available for you to listen to. thunderbird13 Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 I'd gladly swap Tainted Love for yet another piece of mid era Clapton sh*te that the guitarist insists upon playing even when me and the keyboard player have both questioned his sanity Quote
steve-bbb Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012
So you've never covered a Queen song then? Just because a gay bloke had a hit singing it doesn't make it bad. Listen to the Gloria Jones original, grit your teeth and get on with it...
+1. What's the problem?? You're being asked to play a song not bend over and take it royally??? Contrary to popular belief you can't catch it by osmosis or from a toilet seat ! Quote
The Dark Lord Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 But seriously .... it's all about being in a band. There will be, as you recognise, some times where you play songs that you either don't like, don't like playing or both. It depends on who calls the shots in the band and how far you are willing to stray out of your comfort zone. If you don't like a song - tell the others and be constructive. If you're shouted down or outvoted, then you should either ..... just get on with it or pull the plug on your involvement. You choose. I would tolerate the odd such occurence, but if it happened too often, then I would realise that I was in the wrong band. I really didn't like "Superstition" in a band a while back but I bit the bullet as everyone else liked it. I found a way of playing it that better suited my style (kinda "Stranglerised" my part). No one complained about me doing that and I then found it tolerable. Didn't like it, but I could do it. Quote
steve-bbb Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 sorry forgot earlier big plus one for the northern soul original version of this - it knocks spots off the soft cell version anyways! Quote

seashell Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 To my shame, I only realised recently that there was a northern soul verson of this! Heard it on radio 2 and was really impressed. In fact i even asked my bass teacher if he would teach it to me. He said he would but he hasnt yet. Maybe he doesnt really like it either! Quote
ShergoldSnickers Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 Just realised that in ... hang on, quick calculation... 38 years of playing bass I've only played one cover. It was Badge, the Cream ditty, eons ago. Am I missing out? Judging by the videos you lot have posted I might be. Quote

derrenleepoole Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012
Get away with you. Me and my band do something similar to this version as the closer to our first set - always gets 'em up dancing and brings admiring comments from one and all at the bar.
Imelda May can no wrong in my book Quote
BigRedX Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 Either the Imelda May or Gloria Jones versions IMO. Quote
Lfalex v1.1 Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 Compromise, and insist on "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye" instead...? Quote
uncle psychosis Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 Tainted Love is one of the all time classics. I'd love to play it with a band. Quote
Marvin Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 Dia wotist arse of a song. Singer in the last covers band desperately wanted to do the Marilyn Manson version, she got a NO from the rest of us Quote
gub Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 I will swap you running down a friggin dream for tainted love any day , had enough of mind numbingly boring hetro songs and got to be more fun to play than watching paint dry! ;0 Quote
dave_bass5 Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 The singer in my old band somehow managed to sing Wonderwall over the end of this song, just for laughs :-( Quote
JPS Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 I'm obviously easily pleased but really like the original Gloria Jones version and don't mind the Imelda May version either. Then again I've willingly played Everything by Michael Buble in public so am clearly not entitled to an opinion. Quote

This song has also been mentioned in the thread Songs That Make You Vomit (Bilbo). I'm not fan of the original or Marilyn Mansons version either. Our's which is based on the Prozac+ sits somewhere a bit more comfortable. I hope you agree. Quote
martin8708 Posted June 11, 2012 Posted June 11, 2012 (edited) Hey , I would much rather play Tainted love ( Imelda May or Scorpions ) than some of the other stuff in our set list ,, being in a band is about having fun and watching people enjoy themselves . You never know , you may grow to love the song , it's definitely not worth quitting the band , unless you really detest the whole set list . All the best , Martin.
