Fantastic - all the stuff I've seen from that European tour is great. The Otis Live in London and Paris album is from those shows I think.

The Stax/Volt Tour of Norway 1967 is amazing. It's a six-parter, I think... all on YouTube. :D
I could watch it over and over... in fact, I do.

It's that "Region #1" thingy ... can I play that using the DVD drive on a PC?

I love what Duck does and how he really propels a song.

It's interesting to watch his technique though. Thumb coming over the top of the neck. Lots of hand movement. Fretting fingers flailing away.

Like many, I was taught to try and eradicate such 'bad' habits and to use minimal, economic movement, etc etc. So whay am I not a better player than Duck? ;)

Just goes to show, whatever works is whatever works...

Yes, but.... we do Green Onions as a 2nd half opener before the singers come on. Playing it as they do in F its a right old stretch on the left hand if you want no hand movement (which is always my own aim).

Technique is relevant but not all-important to me, the violin style left hand (with thumb over the top) was driven out of me by my classical guitar teacher who whacked it with a ruler if it ever came over. Put me in good stead for my first Precision which had a much fatter neck than I was expecting. Entwhistle is describes as 'sloppy' in another thread because of this. I wonder if the person has been on so many world tours or ever back Sam & Dave?

Anyway, this is my fave (although sound is poor but still get a jist of the screaming organ), such a simple tune but played with such commitment and gusto.

Possibly part of how he adapted originally from being left-handed but playing a rightie & it's stuck?

OK, I know this is not bass playing, but Hendrix was a leftie (played left handed) and a load of the stuff he played couldn't be done without using his thumb over the top.
Try playing some of Robert Johnsons licks, even in G or D tuning, without using your thumb on your left hand.
Personally, I don't really care what's right or wrong as long as it grooves, sounds good and fits the song (sez me who would definitely fail Grade 1 if I was examined.)
