risingson Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 One of those rare occasions that I'm blown away by the sheer complexity of technique and breadth of musical understanding from a bass player. Anthony Jackson hits the nail on the head with an impossible bass part that always reminds me of who I think is probably one of the best bass players of all time. Check it out, even if the music isn't your thing, it's really just a showcase of how far someone has been able to push the envelope of bass whilst retaining such a strong musical identity. Enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GkNoC6nUx4&feature=related Quote
lowdown Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 Such a great tune and arrangement, stonking playing all round and AJ at his best. For some reason i prefer this version to the live version that always does the rounds, and that is pretty amazing. Great post. Garry Quote
steve-soar Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 Dirty f***ers, let's have it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHyHxply7Js&feature=related Quote

chardbass Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 Legend. Such an influential player. Those Camilo albums are incredible- part of the fabric of my college days. Thanks for posting- loving this :-) Quote
funkypenguin Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 (edited) Aaaaaaand again.......just for good measure, and my personal favourite! AJ is one of my 3 favourite bass players and biggest influences as a bassist and musician http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kd349Df1Ows Edited May 3, 2012 by funkypenguin Quote
WHUFC BASS Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 I reckon he should go on stage wearing Lycra a la Steve Harris. That'd make people sit up and take notice of him …. *shudders* Quote
Fat Rich Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 Great player, always amazed at how much he waggles his fingers about though Quote
phil625sxc Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 Amazing player - I've played Noy Yet with a big band a couple of times and it's a killer - chart attached for anyone feeling brave !! :-) Quote
stonecoldbass Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 Yeah there is no questioning AJs skills! Stevie Glasgow and Johnny Copland have a great bunch of his transcriptions. I would love to have a go at Not Yet Phil, but that link you have there doesn't seem to work...? Quote
lowdown Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 PDF link/download working here. Thanks for that. Garry Quote
stonecoldbass Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 Ah yeah got it to work by telling it to open with Adobe. I have a Mac and it doesn't seem to recognise that as a PDF file for some reason. Sweet, off to the shed!! Quote
stonecoldbass Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 I'm curious what album this is from? I have it on the One More Once album but it's a slightly longer and different arrangement, also it's a tad slower... Quote
visog Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 Hmmm OK just to be controversial... I'm not sure I get it. Sure he's great - my personal favourite is Modern Times with Steve Khan but on this tune I'm not sure what he's doing beyond any serious professional player driving an up tempo big-band jazz tune? (I'm not saying I could play anything like this BTW.) What am I missing here? Quote
stonecoldbass Posted May 5, 2012 Posted May 5, 2012 The way he makes it sound so easy! Yes he doing what a lot of pros can do, that's coz he is one. But I think listening to it you still know its AJ, those cascading descending runs are very typical I his playing. So not only is he supporting bad drive a huge ensemble, he still manages to put his unique audio stamp on it. I'd say what more could you want from a big name pro player?? Quote
visog Posted May 6, 2012 Posted May 6, 2012 Ok, for anyone who thought my 'Not Yet' comment was disingenuous to AJ, check out this clip where he's sight reading a difficult head then plays a solo with some great weird AJ harmonies... stonecoldbass Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 Cool! 1hr and 17mins, basically the whole gig! That's my Sunday evening sorted then... Quote
stonecoldbass Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 Hey guys So after getting that PDF to work I set to work trying to get the 1st section of this tune down. Here's a decent take I did, some of the runs are still a little bit sloppy due to rearranging them for 5-string fingering. It's great to get my teeth into something exciting again and I'll hopefully get the whole tune finished in a few weeks. Let me know what you think! PS looks and sounds pretty cool in 1080p! I always find that he and Abe Laboriel are able to make the 'fingers and thumbs' style of playing sound so much more compelling than the likes of Matt Garrison. AJ is just incredible. Quote
lowdown Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 Monster Bass for a Monster player. Garry Quote
