Dave Vader
I was thinking that the ugly metal grill on the front of my harley benton promethean clone was ugly. And then i wondered about wrapping it in some attractive cloth so it looks nicer. Then i wondered if that would be easy, or if it would make horrible farty noises. But I am not sure. Would it need to be proper speaker cloth? Would I need to make a wood frame and do it properly? How would I stick it to a bit of metal grill anyway? Would an old pirate flag do the job nicely? Any suggestions gratefully received.
xgsjx
Good question. Try it. If it doesn't work, take it off again. Mind & post your results.

Delberthot
Behind the cloth of this cab was a standard Trace Elliot grill I'm planning on doing something removable myself with my GK combo and cab when I play with the Getback band so it looks a bit more Vox

Dave Vader
Nice idea J, I might put leather corners on it to look like elbow patches. (Actually considering using Vox cloth, and making a gold badge what says Box on it)
flyfisher
Anything in front of a speaker is bound to interfere with the sound - even metal grilles, which are really only put there for physical protection. I'd go with the 'suck it and see' approach - or should that be 'suck it and hear'?
ThomBassmonkey
As long as the grille is secure, I doubt cloth is gonna make any noticable difference (so long as it's fairly light, heavier fabric might). I'd be more worried about it getting caught when I try and move it.
discreet
Easiest solution? Leave it. It's what it sounds like that counts. You've obviously got too much time on your hands.

Marvin
Have you got a big baggy jumper Dave? If so wrap it tightly around said small cab and it may give a close approximation of what'll happen.

StraightSix
An easy way to check if the material is likely to be suitable is to hold it tightly over your mouth and try to breath through it - if you can in comfort, it should cause no problems with your sound. This is obviously not highly technical but gives a reasonable idea.

You need to consider the insulation qualities, the acoustic dampening, the frequency changes and reflection. Best bet is to wear a single wellington boot, pull the material over your head and whistle loudly after removing all your clothes to ensure no reflected frequencies are being absorbed.
