SPHDS
I have just become the proud owner of an Epiphone Explorer Bass in Black (loving it!) and was wondering what the best sort of stand is for it at gigs, I have an 'A' frame type, but this makes the bass sit at an angle and you have to be very careful how you place the bass on the stand so it doesn't topple over.....! http://www.amazon.co...cal-instruments I was wondering if a tripod stand would work (or would it just slide sideways out of the bottom hanger....!?!) http://www.herculess...fe_guitar_stand Another option I've thought of is one of those rack types that you can place several guitars on, but am wondering if it will even fit on one of those.....! http://www.herculess...Holds_3_Guitars Or I have seen 'neck grab' stands that look like they would work, but I am not sure if the bass would fit on one of them as the Explorer is not the most compact of basses - I obviously don't want the bass to be resting on the floor, or banging on the legs of the stands. http://www.herculess...Universal_stand or http://produkte.k-m....nd-Double-black Another, slightly left field idea I thought of was would a cello stand work (would the neck of the bass fit into the neck bracker of the stand.....!?!) http://www.herculess...rab_Cello_Stand Or will I have to resort to making my own from about 4' of wood and a wall hanging neck bracket......!?! http://www.herculess...rd%2C_short_arm Sorry for the waffle, any help is appreciated.....! andydye
I have the Hercules ones that do the grabby thing and they've worked fine with all my basses, I have 35" scale Lakland at the mo and the stand-neck extends far enough for my bass to be comfortably off the floor... neepheid
I have one of the neck grab Hercules stands - I could extend it fully and measure from the top of the neck grab to the floor if you like? My RD Artist, while not as pointy as an Explorer is still a pretty unwieldy beast barely fits in it, but sits fine in a sideways rack. markstuk
I use Hercules GS414's (neck grab) - and even with my dinger there's a good six inches of clearance at max extension (oh err missus) :-)
discreet
The Auto Grab Universal would do you. The bass doesn't bang on the legs of the stand - it rests on them. If you look carefully you can see the legs are sheathed in foam just for this purpose.
neepheid
I have the Hercules ones that do the grabby thing and they've worked fine with all my basses, I have 35" scale Lakland at the mo and the stand-neck extends far enough for my bass to be comfortably off the floor...
Scale length isn't the problem though - there isn't a lot of extraneous bodywork below the bridge of those Laklands. And that's where the problem lies. My RD Artist won't fit very well in the Hercules stand for that reason. The Hercules grabs at the nut, then you have 34.5" and THEN you have another 3-4" of body after that where the switches are. SPHDS
Cheers, Looks like it may just have to be a case of 'try before you buy'.....! The main issues I saw were all to do with the extreme angles of the bass (much steeper than the RD!) so yeah, quite a bit to stick out past the bridge, and hence why the sideways rack may not work....! That was why I was wondering if the cello rack might work, as it is taller than the guitar racks......! I saw the foam legs but was worried that the bass might be too long and hit the feet rather than the foam....! Cheers Neepheid, that could be useful if you don't mind measuring it up for me.....! BigRedX
The Hercules stands extend far enough to support an Overwater Original - 36" scale Thunderbird-ish shaped body. Fully extended it's 45" from the top of the grab to the ground.
jim_bass
I have a hercules dual grabby stand and it goes high and does a good job.
shunt2
Might be worth a trip to your local guitar shop. Had a epi firebird a few years back and bought a stand with a rotating seat at the bottom so no matter how extreme the angle of guitars end it just sat right. Cost about £15 and was a cracking good idea, just don,t know who made it
