Carles Benavent

I think most of you are familiar with the style of Carles Benavent, the great flamenco bassplayer..
This was posted somewhere else on the internet and I wanted to share this with you..
I love the sound and the techniques he uses...Starts around 1'15" (before there is some Spanish explanation which sounds exotic but I'm not familiar with this beautiful language).
For some of you who post the usual comments "Get yourself a guitar.." : I found this to be absolutely in the "bass" repertoire and not "over-guitarish".

Sorry - does very little for me. Impressive and all that... but just rather dull and unfulfilling. Horrible tone too (at least through my PC speakers).

It's another side of bass but still bass in my ears and I find it very inspiring ...Some of the techniques he uses I find useful to blow the dust of my own playing. Not that I succeed but even trying helps me to get out of a rut sometimes.
Plenty of slap around.. while this is something else and more unique in my ears...

Really? I thought these speakers were reasonable - but as it's my work PC I'll just have to make do with what I have...

I find this much more interesting and melodic than a slap-fest although I do think I would get a little tired with the middy/treble tone of that bass over a long gig. Its definitely good to see someone who has great facility with a pick as well (like Steve Swallow) to challenge lots of baked-in notions about the 'right way' to play certain genres of music.

Finally, sorry to be a pedant but his first name is Carles

Great video! Nice little Portrait of Tracy quote as well thrown in there.

People like Carles and Bobby Vega are behind my efforts at being a more proficient pick player.

EDIT - Is he using some sort of hybrid picking technique at points in there? Guessing he's using the pick between index and thumb, but also using middle and ring for plucking other strings.

that second clip was great not my bag but i hear and see the passion in that peice
