sarah thomas
Bit of a long shot, but I'm looking for a second hand kit for my husband. 18" kick drum preferred. Anyone got a seldom used kit looking for a good home? Edited June 3, 2012 by sarah thomas
keeptrying
There's some good deals on ebay, especially if you're just buying a shell pack and add your own cymbals and stands etc.
sarah thomas
Cheers! I got him a Gretsch Catalina shell kit and we are now waiting impatiently for the postman.
Dad3353
Good choice... (imho...). Recommendations for cymbals... With adequate budget... Paiste 602 reissues Without... Sabian AAX... Hope this helps.
sarah thomas
Thanks for the cymbal advice. In the meantime, his drum teacher is going to help out, as I believe he has more cymbals than his wife considers feasible ... I expect my husband's wife may feel the same in another couple of years. sarah thomas
Ha! We had our first public outing at an open mic evening at Cafe Jazz in Cardiff. Luckily for us, the house band didn't turn up and Phil made his debut on a drum kit cobbled together from the club basement and the house of a friendly audience member. Later Phil said he couldn't hear me. Funny, I could hear him very well indeed. We seemed to go down pretty well and were asked back to do a set, although that may have had more to do with our two stars, the young and attractive pianist and vocalist than it did with the grizzled, cynical drum and bass corner of the stage. So, just need to learn another 12 or so songs ...
Silvia Bluejay
Loving this thread, Sarah! Well done, and all the best to your band. I'm sure the cynical rhythm section can hold its own, both musically and aesthetically! Edited May 25, 2012 by bluejay
keeptrying
totally agree with dad3353, on your choice of kit. Gretsch make nice kits. as for cymbals borrowing and playing other peoples is a good thing as you get to try different types till you find the ones that sound right for you. Zildjian avedis quick beat hi hats have a lovely sound, I picked up a pair on ebay for £120. also Istanbul make a nice jazz ride. good luck with the band, I always reckon the rhythm section should be grizzled and cynical, it adds atmosphere. sarah thomas
Thankyou everyone for your encouragement and suggestions. We now have a hi-hat stand, bass pedal and snare stand but are still waiting for the drums ... I've contacted icore couriers who say they specialise in drums and have my fingers crossed. The seller seems kosher but either clueless or rushed for time. If anyone has any ideas on getting a shell kit from Hartlepool to Cardiff, I'd love to hear them, however daft. This is a great forum with a great bunch of people.
sarah thomas
The saga continues and the denouement is close to hand ... The ebay seller cancelled and made a full refund so I ordered what the man really really wanted in the first place. Mapex Meridian Maple jazz kit - http://www.drumshop.co.uk/buy/mapex-meridian-maple-5-piece-drum-kit.htm And I thought double basses were money pits ... Mapex Meridian Maple jazz kit...[/quote] Well, at least you tried. Nice choice, Mapex have some very good advantages, and are more than simply a 'starter' kit. If this is indeed new territory, could I suggest a search on t'web for the Drum Tuning Bible (free for download...) which covers the standard way to tune drums (yes, to the surprise of all, drums need tuning to get decent results. There is, afaik, no electronic tuner to help with this...). There are a few schools of thought on the subject, but it's an excellent starting point (I've used these methods for the last 40 years, and see where that's got me..!). An experienced drummer would be a help for the first 'check up', to avoid some pitfalls. Just sayin'... Matt P
mmm pretty, you can't go wrong with that store either, they're our drummers prefered seller, we're lucky that they're just up the road from us although we haven't been to their new store, we only ever knew the tiny shoebox-sized store they used to operate from (i've never seen so much drum kit in such a small space.) we've got a band outing planned for next month as our guitarist is also a drummer. sarah thomas
Thankyou very much for the recommendation for the Drum Tuning Bible. I've downloaded and saved it. Hopefully, Phil's teacher will help with the tuning (he wants a Mapex Meridian himself). Thanks also for the thumbs up on the store - it's reassuring to hear. Hopefully the kit will last him. At least he shouldn't be wanting another one in four years time - although he said that about his Ducati ... Now, I am going to play my bass. sarah thomas
The drum shop rang up and said there had been a mistake in their advert - we thought so, as it was advertised as a 5 piece set. We assumed they meant the drum riser was a fifth piece. Anyway, what a great shop. After checking that I did in fact want what they were selling, they upgraded us to next day delivery. It should be here tomorrow! Phil's teacher is coming round Sunday to advise on tuning it and the band gets together next on Tuesday. Exciting times (must have a lie down).
