Truckstop
My band do the end bit from The Chain as a sort of intro and then straight into Wishing Well. Seems to go down pretty well and it's fun. Truckstop
Happy Jack
We don't start with this ... but we should. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=4D21mxgGRhY

Acebassmusic
We usually start with something like "Long Train Running" - immediately recognisable and gets people feet tapping straight away. We do 3 or 4 songs one straight after the other, minimal gap, just to get the momentum going.

pikeman
We start with "Shine on you crazy diamond" which gives the singer another 8 minutes at the bar.

Graham56
Depends... If it's a crowd that need a gentle warm-up first (especially if it's a lunchtime gig or a venue that doesn't normally have bands), we start with something mid-paced, such as Van Morrison's "And it Stoned me". If we feel it's time to go in with more impact, we normally do a rocked up version of "Bohemian Like You".

[/quote] Varies, but we now kind ease into it for pub gigs , and agree with the 3/4 songs to get into it & gauge the situation.

chrismuzz
We open with one of two Avenged Sevenfold songs. Either Afterlife or Nightmare, as they both have a pre-recorded intro for before we crack into the main riff. Pre recorded intros are such a cheesy metal thing, but it works every time
Roland Rock
I like songs which ease into the set. Two favourites of mine from various bands are the Headhunters' version of Watermelon Man, and Space Oddity
Jambo10
If it's just a full on rock kinda gig, we start with Queen's fast rock version of We Will Rock You, or in more recent times the Foo's Arlandria.
Bigjas
1st set we open with 'I will follow - U2' and 2nd set we open with 'When the sun goes down - Arctic monkeys' Works for us Jas
