Saw Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings the other night on Jools Holland and was really intrigued by the bassists cool looking bass.
After a bit or research, it turns out it's an olc short scale 1969 Carvin 77-AGB. I used to have a more modern Carvin Jazz type but has anyone seen anything like this about anywhere?

"I use roundwound strings, and I keep them real dirty. I’m always hesitant to put on new strings. Whenever I do, it always sounds awful, so I end up rubbing some grease into them. I’ll get some French fries or ham or rub anything with grease onto the strings until I can rid them of that awful tone."

Never a truer word said. I f@cking hate bright sounding basses. Makes my ears bleed.

It's a quote from the article. I like his attitude. I also like that he's the bass player and producer, and his band is the house band for his own label. That's what I'm trying to do with my guys. I think he's going to become a bit of a role model for me.

The main thing I don't want to copy is pretending that it's still the mid-60s. I like some digital recording technology. I also like valve amps and cutting everything live. I also can't pretend that there haven't been any interesting musical developments since then.

The other thing I don't want to copy is rubbing grease into my strings. I have OCD when it comes to that. I can't eat a packet of crisps and pick up my bass without washing my hands first. At the same time, I haven't changed the strings on my main bass in 5 years (I hate that new string sound too, even though I play a fair amount of slap stuff).

Sorry, that was all off-topic.

I wonder how much he paid for that bass in a pawn shop?
