untune Posted May 29, 2012 Author Share Posted May 29, 2012 Thanks EBS freak, I'm not sure if it's any of those - I've zoomed a bit and it appears that the scratchplate does not pass the left side of the neck, so the upper horn side of the body is bare. Most of those have quite big scratchplates that stretch all the way to the upper horn. Also that strip where the controls are reminds me of something but I can't remember what. I do remember seeing something that had a Hofner style block on top of a scratchplate but don't know what - might have been one of those Eastern European/Russian basses. It appears to have a sortof binding around the Fender-esque headstock, and the logo is right at the top. Seems to be in some kind of script, with a letter that falls below the line like an f, p, etc... hence I thought it was a Hofner but an image search only brings up the Violin style ones Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I'd guess it's one of the first series, but with the longer horns - [url="http://www.vintagehofner.co.uk/hofner/basses/bas17.html"]http://www.vintagehofner.co.uk/hofner/basses/bas17.html[/url] ("It appears that, after a year or so, the body was changed to a "Strat" type body (but still with the "set-in" neck)") Headstock shape looks right, truss rod cover looks right, square tuner buttons look right, rectangular angled pearloid control plate looks right, can't really make out much else. untune Posted May 29, 2012 Author Share Posted May 29, 2012 Just as you've found that I think I came to pretty much the same conclusion neepheid, it looks like the one in the second link (missing all the hardware, pickups etc of course) but that's the only one that matches the headstock as the later Hofner 182 has a slightly different headstock but retains the strat-esque shape etc. Thanks for everyone's help - the gentleman with the Hofner (we presume!) is my grandad, who died in 1980, 7 years before I was born. The guy behind him is my great uncle playing what I've always been told is the 2nd Fender strat to be imported into the UK after the import ban was lifted, ie the one after Cliff/Hank Marvin's. I knew my grandad played bass among other things and always wanted to find out what it was he played so that I could ponder building a tribute as a project. Always thought it was a Fender but seemingly not! Today is my birthday and I'm off work, stumbled on this picture by accident and have solved the mystery!
