Relatively speaking, they are a lot quieter than an ordinary acoustic guitar.

I have one but it's far too quiet in a pure acoustic setting and howls like a demented cat unless I spend an inordinate amount of time playing with positioning and amp settings.

ime acoustic basses are for looks and solo practice...

you'll have a hard time competing even with fingerpicked acoustic.

... because it's not a double bass sized body, and even if it was you'd want an amp.
