MoonBassAlpha Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 I was talking to a Photographer at our gig last night and happened to mention that there was a website for bass players called BassChat, and he thought it was the funniest thing he'd ever heard! He might have been thinking along the lines of Priest Chat off Father Ted, which WAS funny. Even our drummer chipped in, saying it should be called Bass Spod! Is this the regard in which we (collectively) are held? On the upside, he did send me an arty pic of me playing. Quote
thisnameistaken Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 It's not a great name to be fair. Sounds pretty twee. I remember once the drummer in my last band spotted my account here and he and the guitarist made fun of me for the whole of the next rehearsal. Quote
arthurhenry Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 I remember one of the editors of Bass player commenting that after telling someone what he did, they replied, chuckling: "You're kidding me, there's a magazine for bass players?!" Quote
gjones Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 I think it should change it's name to www.bassgeeks.co.uk Quote
skankdelvar Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 (edited) An otherwise entirely pleasant chap of my acqaintance always sniggers when I mention our mighty forum by name. Better name than some websites, though. Twee, for me, would be something like - I dunno - PurplePineapple or WhizMonkey. Sappy f***ing names thought up by earnest 'net-savvy' little Hoxton Twats riding round their offices on tricycles. Basschat is a solid, manly sort of name and as British as a cup of hot, strong tea. Big_Stu Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 My other half gave it "oooh, fwend..... bass fwends!" for a few days after she clocked it....... Quote
flyfisher Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012
I was talking to a Photographer at our gig last night and happened to mention that there was a website for bass players called BassChat, and he thought it was the funniest thing he'd ever heard!
What was funny? The name or the fact that there's a website for bass players? Can't be that the website exists, surely, otherswise he'd presumably also think it funny thqat there are loads of photography forums on the web. As for the name, well let's see now, it's for chatting about bass matters so what would he suggest as an alternative? Though I suppose it could be a disappointment for any bass fishermen out there. LiamPodmore Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 Sounds better than TalkBass. My band frequently take the p*ss for both, but ah well. Liam Quote
ahpook Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 of course it's funny...spesh when you type asschat. oh, the hours fly by ! Quote
BottomE Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 My lot wet themselves when i mentioned it by name. Quote

Salt on your Bass? Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 Yeah, my guys found it funny for some reason I think due to both topic and title......that was until the drummer found a similar drum site - soon changed his mind as he found a plethora of useful info on performing, kit and second hand gear....... I like the name, never found it amusing and it confuses me when people do! Quote

megallica Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 I'm assuming that every musical instrument will have a message forum set up and don't see why anyone who is net savvy would find this humurous. I don't really care whether or not people think its funny that I browse/post on this site as it's such a great resource for bass players, I can take a bit of stick. Quote
Low End Bee Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 I have to own up to calling this place Bassnerd to other musos I know, This means I own up to being one too. Quote
ben604 Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 I get roundly mocked when I mention Basschat, universally - Girlfriend ("...bloody Basschat, stop buying and selling stuff!"), band mates, work colleagues... Quote
MoonBassAlpha Posted June 1, 2012 Author Posted June 1, 2012
What was funny? The name or the fact that there's a website for bass players?
That was partly my point - I think he found it funny that someone mundane enough to play the bass could possibly want or need a dedicated website. We really are held in that kind of low regard by some! Quote
Spoombung Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 It's a naff name, alright. People laugh when you mention it. 'Talkbass' is also naff, as is 'Basenotes' (the perfume forum) I go to a lot. Too many basses/bases, too much talking/chatting/notes. Quote
Kiwi Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 2,300,000 hits a month speaks for itself, I think. Quote

risingson Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 The rest of the boys in the band find it hilarious that I use this site, but I don't care... it's too good, and I'm too big of a nerd to not want to talk about bass!! Haha Quote
TimR Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012
2,300,000 hits a month speaks for itself, I think.
All from the same 23 users It's geeky rather than nerdy. I think there was a thread recently about personality types where strangely we all fitted into the same group. Funny that. There are chat rooms/forums on practically every subject but the strangest one I've seen is Pistonheads a very narrow demographic! I'm a member of about 4 different ones on different subjects and they're all the same and mainly the off topic subjects are the same and the busiest areas. Quote

skankdelvar Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 (edited) I've always thought that those who snigger at other peoples' specialist interests or hobbies - trams, philately, house bricks, whatever - are entirely deficient in the virtues of empathy, wisdom and politeness. That they freely articulate such views in the belief that they are demonstrating their innate superiority speaks volumes about their witlessness. It's rather like the person who says "You read books? God, how boring" and howls with idiot laughter. You don't know whether to pity them or lure them to a subterranean cavern and butcher them in the interests of the wider public good. . Edited June 1, 2012 by skankdelvar Quote
