Billy Apple
I don't give a monkeys-chuffbox about what people think about stuff like this. You have to call it something. Even if you called it something really cool, like the 'The Cathedral In Worship Of The Sonic Rumble-Hammer', someone would pick fault. I think the fact that the site can be called asschat at certain angles is a bit of comic genius and makes the place all the more endearing. Myself, I came on here nearly 2 years ago asking questions about valve amps.. and ended up with a full on Matamp rig. In the meantime I have.. Made friends Fell out with people Apologised and made friends with them Been to gigs with BC'ers playing Bought gear Sold gear Received top notch pro-advice Had bass lessons Auditioned for a name band Auditioned for unknown bands Met with other BC'ers in real life and got drunk with them Bought a Basschat shirt that was too big Won a competition I think Basschat is great, who cares about the name.... PS. Next weekend I'm off to see my pal in Brighton, and guess what? Our very own Big Red X is playing with Dick Venom and the Terror-tones, and I'm going. Plus I might be able to get a try-out on a Lakland Decade belonging to a fellow BC'er. How cool is that? Thank you asschat! [/quote] I've only been here 7 months, but in such a short time I have been helped with my bass playing by this site's collective knowledge, been inspired to purchase and play new gear I wouldn't otherwise have considered, found new friends I really, really like, and been to other members' gigs, alone or with other BCers. And hopefully I've contributed to the site a little bit too, with tiny nuggets of advice on the few things I know about, and by trying to organise real life meetups. Long may BC continue to thrive
4-string-thing
Someone in my old band thought it was hilarious that there was a forum for bass players.... Til I told him it was where musicians went to slag off ham-fisted knuckle heads, or guitarists as they're more commonly known!

derrenleepoole
America has Talkbass - somehow masculine in how it sounds. UK has Basschat - sounds much more civilised and proper. I mostly visit for comedic purposes than information any more. I find BC is a much better source, because the majority of the users on here aren't afraid to admit when they're wrong. So the term 'Talkbass' sounds authoritive, direct and self-important, whereas 'Basschat' sounds more civil, proper and a bit more laid back etc. I don't go on Basstalk at all anymore simply because I found it too childish and silly and bitchy... Gust0o
Wow, chap hop has finally surfaced on Basschat - this can only be a good day. What was the other one, fighting trousers? Anyways... So, I have better gear; I know how it all works; I understand how my bass is put together; I understand how to best set it up and what to do it anything goes wrong; and I have good technique. Look around your rehearsal room, from that position, and then see the difference Basschat has made - your guitarist may laugh as he tries tells you his Epiphone is a Gibson; or your drummer puts more tape on his skins, but the joke's on them. flyfisher
Actually, my 1971 Massey Ferguson 135 is regarded as a classic tractor rather than a vintage tractor, but I don't really know why. All I do know is that, like Basschat, there's a whole world of specialist knowledge out there that the web can connect us to when necessary and it has saved me a lot of dosh when fixing stuff on the tractor. As for "tractor = vintage", that may be so in one sense, but modern tractors are packed with quite sophisticated electronics these days. For example, combine harvesters measure and record the crop yield on a metre-by-metre basis (using GPS) and that data is used to adjust the amount of fertiliser to be added, metre-by-metre, to the field for the next crop - all automatically of course. Er, it's a bit embarassing to admit I even know that sort of stuff really. Just one of my many anoraks.
BigRedX
My band started taking this place much more seriously when I pointed out how many extra gigs we got, how many new fans came to them and how many CDs were sold as a result of my being on this site. Cat Burrito
I find nothing so odd about Basschat that makes me laugh out loud or find it sadder than anything else in life. This other site I go on is where I get to read detailed accounts of TV shows I chose not to watch, hear about meals other people are having that I wasn't invited to and then it dawns on me many of these people I haven't actually seen for over 20yrs and they are my friends. Now that is just crazy!?! It's called Facebook

BottomE
I told a cracking joke last gig that was off of the Bad Jokes thread. The band wet themselves. When they asked about the source of my jocularity i told them "Basschat". This produced more laughter than the funny joke.
