leftyhook Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 So the upright currently being held hostage by myself- never having played one before, I never realised that the area on the fingerboard under the deepest string is flat. ??!! Meaning I can't change the strings around on a EUB I was looking at. true? cheers for any info Quote
EssentialTension Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 (edited) They don't all have the E string bevel. What EUB was it? Edited June 2, 2012 by EssentialTension Quote
leftyhook Posted June 2, 2012 Author Posted June 2, 2012 ah right. Steinberger NXT... if not something of a similar price.....? Quote

Silvia Bluejay Posted June 3, 2012 Posted June 3, 2012 (edited) My NS NXT 5 has a round fingerboard too. Edit: and my HB as well. Edited June 3, 2012 by bluejay Quote
leftyhook Posted June 4, 2012 Author Posted June 4, 2012 Seems there is an issue regarding changing the strings as the profile of the fingerboard varies from E to G in most cases. Luckily I can play bass with strings the standard righty way too. May have to just settle with that, unless I can find a reasonable price lefty.. Quote
sarah thomas Posted June 4, 2012 Posted June 4, 2012 Why do some have a bevel? There must be a reason. Quote
Good question Sarah. I wasn't aware it existed. I think it might to be to stabilise/improve grip on the E string? Quote
EssentialTension Posted June 4, 2012 Posted June 4, 2012 It's to give the E string more space in which to vibrate. Quote

iiipopes Posted June 4, 2012 Posted June 4, 2012 (edited)
Why do some have a bevel? There must be a reason.
It's called the "Romberg" bevel. It's there for the added string excursion necessary for an E string to speak properly. It's also sometimes found on cellos. Yo Yo Ma actually has a concave bevel on his cello (like a trough). Sorry it's Wiki, but I have found Wiki to be, like the USA "World Book Encyclopedia" (American spelling without the dipthong), a good starting point for future research, an article about Romberg: http://en.wikipedia....ernhard_Romberg And a brief summary of all things fingerboard, including the bevel, from a respected USA shop: http://www.gollihurm...TS_TO_KNOW.html Edited June 4, 2012 by iiipopes Quote
