Finally caved. I love my 4 string Shuker Jazz so much, that I've sorted out a 5 string version to be built.

I've asked Jon to keep everything as close as possible to the 4 string, just with the obvious adjustments that need to be made for the extra string. Here's the specs:

5 string J bass classic

34" scale
21 frets
45 mm nut width
18mm string spacing
20.5mm neck depth at 1st fret
22,5mm at 12th
maple neck
maple board
two way truss rod
carbon fibre reinforcement
medium frets
black f/board dots (standard layout)
black 2mm side dots
satin neck lacquer (vintage tint)
bone nut
Normal wind tuners - gotoh

alder body (traditional shape)
polyester basecoat
Olympic White colour coat
villex 5 string J pickups
vol, balance, mid, treble cut
Brown Tortoiseshell pickguard
Chrome control plate with black knobs
chrome hardware
gotoh 5 string bridge

Always wanted a nice 5 string Jazz (had a couple of DJ5's and while they were great instruments, they just didn't work for me) and so I reasoned the best thing to do would be to get the builder of the 4 string Jazz I have that I love so much to build me a 5 string version! I struggled to decide on the finish/pickguard combo, but I think white/tort will go nicely with the maple fingerboard :)

All going to plan this should be underway in the next couple of months!

This is essentially what I did (albeit 'off the shelf'), loved my Fender J so much, I bought the exact same 5 string version. It works lol.

Looking forward to seeing this! :)

Congrats Higgie! I love the look of your other Shuker Jazz. This one is going to be pretty damn tasty too, I am sure! Jon is up there with the very best. I reckon he's UK's finest. :)

Yeah after playing yours I just thought, if this guy is capable of making a 6 string fanned fret as comfortable as this, he's the guy to build me a 5 string J :P

Obviously they are worlds apart, but everything of his I have seen/played has been absolutely stunning.

+ 1 million. On top of his incredible luthiery skills, his eye and attention to making sure the smallest details are perfect certainly sets him out from the rest. :)

Just had an update from Mr Shuker - The body is done and routed, and the basecoat has been sprayed and flatted. Next job will be spraying the Olympic white! The neck has been sawn and routed for the truss rod and carbon fibre channels. Fretboard still needs to be made and glued. Pictures of the body before the Olympic White goes on should be with me soon! :)

Very nice.
My second Shuker should be ready in 4 weeks.
Bet you can't wait for it to be finished.
It's worth the wait.

It's a 6 string fretted one like this with a Delano pickup and 3 band EQ.
