Musicman20 Posted June 8, 2012 Posted June 8, 2012 Musicman over Fender, especially with a 5 string bass. Quote
Musicman over Fender, regardless. If you want P or a J sound, and the musicman sound, get a Big Al 5 SSS. Have you considered a Sandberg KenTaylor 5??? Quote
Doctor J Posted June 8, 2012 Posted June 8, 2012 Three very different instruments there, do you know what you're actually looking for from this bass? Quote
Chris Horton Posted June 8, 2012 Posted June 8, 2012 I vote for SR5. I love the look of the reflex but I wonder if all the controls are a bit over the top. I have never played one yet. I have owned a USA deluxe jazz 5 and I was disappointed with the B string. Could just my bass though. Quote

OliverBlackman Posted June 8, 2012 Posted June 8, 2012 have owned a musicman and jazz american deluxe and agree the musicman is miles better! Better built, more resonant woods, more powerful pre-amp, hotter pickups, better B string..... list goes on Quote
Chris Horton Posted June 8, 2012 Posted June 8, 2012 What kind of music do you play ? What tone are you looking for ? Ahhhhhhhhh who am i kidding .............................Just get a Stingray 5 it will do it all Quote

moonbass Posted June 9, 2012 Posted June 9, 2012 If you're not decided on Fender vs Musicman can I suggest you try a Precision 5 as well; to me it's a closer comparison than the Jazz to a Stingray for sitting well in a mix. Also as much as I love my Stingray 5 I still find myself endlessly tweaking the tone to sit right on recordings whereas Fender (despite lower build quality generally) are just 'there'. And Stingrays do seem to still have that weak G string (although not generally as marked as the Stingray 4). Quote
PTB Posted June 9, 2012 Posted June 9, 2012 Your signature says you already have a "Fender American Jazz Deluxe 5" so not sure why you are considering another? I've had several MM's - 4s and 5s. They do sound good but they are mostly heavy basses which is an issue for me - may not be for you. You'll get a lot more for your £s if you buy used via BassChat. Quote

Go to the shop. Play every 5 string they've got, even if you weren't considering them. Something you try might just surprise you. It's worked for me in the past.... Quote
basstech Posted June 9, 2012 Author Posted June 9, 2012 Thanks guys! Mm string ray 5 is the way to go... Quote
Chris Horton Posted June 9, 2012 Posted June 9, 2012 All joking aside , I would defiantly recommend going to the best bass shop you you can find and playing ALL the five string bass guitars that are hanging on the wall. It is the only way to find out what you do and don't like. Quote
Ive had 3 Ray's and 5 EBMM basses in total, and tried countless others and never experienced this 'previalant' weak G-string. I understand there has been an issue in the past on a certain run of Stingray 4's and no one was ever quite sure where the issue was coming from. Still this was a while ago, and I haven't come across anyone who has experienced it on their SR5. Quote
Stephen Houghton Posted September 15, 2012 Posted September 15, 2012 Just bought a MM Stingray 5 and wouldnt part with it for the world, awesome bass. Cant believe the tones you get just with the EQ on the bass itself, does wheigh a lot, its like carrying a log at times but worth the effort, plus you get fit as well What did you get in the end?
