molan Posted June 10, 2012 Posted June 10, 2012 A couple of friends and I are putting a little band together, may just be for jamming & rehearsal but might develop further depending on how we all get on Inspiration for this was initially stuff like Little Feat's Rock n Roll Doctor & Dixie Chicken. We then thought about rockier versions of soul & funk songs like the Stevie Ray Vaughn version of Superstition & the Chili's Higher Ground (although I could never play Flea's bass part!). Basically looking for anything that's essentially 'rock' but with a really good funky groove to it - all suggestions much appreciated Quote
Judo Chop Posted June 10, 2012 Posted June 10, 2012 Some of the Stone Roses' stuff is quite funky Quote
Roland Rock Posted June 10, 2012 Posted June 10, 2012 The Faces' 'Stay With Me' Whole Lotta Love 'Momma Said' by Lenny Kravitz Quote

Bigjas Posted June 10, 2012 Posted June 10, 2012 Have a listen to the Arctic Monkeys album - whatever people say I am. There are some great songs that are nice to play, my favourites are Dancing Shoes, I bet you look good on the dance floor, A certain romance, and From the ritz to the rubble. Jas Quote
JTUK Posted June 10, 2012 Posted June 10, 2012 Maybe too groovy but Get Ready by Rockford, Dr, my eyes, Jackson Brown, Cruel ( Live cut ) and Georgie Porgie, Toto, and maybe Luther Vandross, Love the one you're with are on the list for my next project. Quote
Cameronj279 Posted June 10, 2012 Posted June 10, 2012 I've just learned Runaway by Jamiroquai in the last day or so, it's really funky and really fun to play! It's not that hard either Quote

Rayman Posted June 10, 2012 Posted June 10, 2012 We do Dani California and Can't Stop by the Chillis, they go down well usually. We also funked up Word Up by Gun, with a slappy poppy bassline, again that worked pretty good. Quote
Lozz196 Posted June 10, 2012 Posted June 10, 2012 Sure Hard to Handle Now, by The Black Crowes Black Betty, by Ram Jam Quote
molan Posted June 10, 2012 Author Posted June 10, 2012 Thanks for all these guys - some great suggestions in here.
We also funked up Word Up by Gun, with a slappy poppy bassline, again that worked pretty good.
Does that mean you turned it back into the original version of the song by Cameo Quote

paul torch Posted June 11, 2012 Posted June 11, 2012 Randy California's (Spirit) version of I Don't Want Nobody. Quote
Paul S Posted June 11, 2012 Posted June 11, 2012 Here is a track my band were toying with for a while - 'Shaky Ground' by ex-Whitesnake guitarist Bernie Marsden. Nice funky little number if you don't care whether anyone has heard of it or not http://youtu.be/h5mEFmKnqco Or another one we had a look at... Joe Walsh (James Gang) 'Funk 49' http://youtu.be/uO-UKN9nrhQ Quote
paul_5 Posted June 11, 2012 Posted June 11, 2012 Anything from the first 'Rage Against The Machine' album? Quote
Shambo Posted June 11, 2012 Posted June 11, 2012 The Cake version of 'I Will Survive' might suit your M.O. I've never found a male singer who can get over the baggage that comes with it though. Shame really. Quote
Paul S Posted June 11, 2012 Posted June 11, 2012 Just found it - Travers, Bogart, Appice version of Superstitious, a little heavier than the Beck version. http://youtu.be/ofoZupYI5oQ Quote

phil.i.stein Posted June 11, 2012 Posted June 11, 2012 Rob Zombie rocked out the Commodore's classic for the film 'House of a Thousand Corpses', and it kills. not too complex either ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMuvD7sK3L8 Quote
peteb Posted June 11, 2012 Posted June 11, 2012 (edited) Some of these suggestions are a bit random considering the songs that the OP said that he was thinking of doing in his initial post...! Edited June 11, 2012 by peteb Quote
