Broken into years to make easier reading...

1986 - 1990 - Me
1991 -1992 - Me
1993 - 1995 - Me
1996 - 1998 - Me
1999 - 2001 - Me
2002 - 2004 - Me
2005 - 2006 - Me
2007 - 2009 - Me
2009 - 2012 - Me

I'm so good I scare myself sometimes... :D

I think that many of these will appear on other's lists as well:

Not necessarily in this order...

Mick Karn/ Stanley Clarke/ Markus Miller/ Don "Duck" Dunn/ Robbie Shakespeare/ Tony Gadd/ Paul "Tubbs" Williams/James Jameson/ Jack Bruce/ Roly Wynne

I do, of course, reserve the right to include other people's selections and to change my mind..

Something like....in no particular order:

James Jamerson
Marcus Miller
John Patitucci
Geddy Lee
Pino Palladino
Stanley Clarke
Alain Caron
Bernard Edwards
Jaco Pastorius
Bruce Foxton

I stuck Bruce in there at the end purely because, he may not be a virtuoso, but he is the reason I play bass. His tone and lines stood out for me among all the other bassists of his generation.

I know technically that's twelve, but I just can't decide between them.

I mostly don't like virtuoso bass players. So, in no particular order, and only bass guitarists:

Leonard Hubbard
Andy Rourke
Mark Bedford
Robert Sledge
Norwood Fisher
Mark Brydon
Aston Barrett
Les Claypool
Horace Panter
Bernard Edwards

Big question!

In no particular order :

Les Claypool
Ryan Martinie
Arif Mirabdolbaghi
Justin Chancellor
Nick Schendzielios
James Leach
Evan Brewer
Juan Alderete
Victor Wooten
Can't think of his name but the bassist from Maximum the Hormone

Then there's the obvious like Marcus Miller, Mark King etc. Les claypool and Ryan Martinie are definetly the reason I decided to pick up bass

Is it ok if I swap virtuosos for people whose music I can actually enjoy without seeing them do it?

If so,

Troy Gregory
Bernard Edwards
Cliff Williams
Tony Choy
Roger Patterson
Dan Berglund
Doug Wimbish
Colin Hodgkinson
Geddy Lee
Sean Malone

Yeah, that will do for today.

What ????....no James Jamerson ????

Surely any list worth it's salt should have him at the top.

Cliff Burton
Jason Newsted
Geezer Butler
David Ellefson
Ian Hill
Steve Harris

James Jamerson
Duck Dunn
Stanley Clarke
Marcus and Jaco - in a more indirect way as I don't seem to listen to their stuff all the time.

I would like to add that no individual bass player inspired me to learn to play the instrument - I was mostly driven by the desire to "dissect" (so to speak) and play the songs I like, and especially the old ones (any genre) which I have liked for most of my lifetime.
