Bassman Steve
Tony Levin, of course, apologies for missing you off Tone. I'll ditch Colin Hodgkinson for you - you've got a better moustache too.

(Yes, I did see the winkey.) As a keyboards guy, I know zilch about bass players, yet could easily name at least two dozen bass players who've meant a lot for my love for the bass, for example: Cor Dekker (Ekseption) Bert Ruiter (Focus) Ron van Eck (Supersister) Rinus Gerritsen (Golden Earring) Jack Bruce Chris Squire Ray Shulman (Gentle Giant) - he's mentioned far too little, I feel Jannick Top Jeffrey Hammond John Glascock Jaco Pastorius Stanley Clarke JJ Burnel Bakithi Kumalo John Patitucci Muzz Skillings Doug Wimbish Sean Malone Les Claypool Georg Riedel Red Mitchell Ron Carter Charlie Mingus Is that 10 yet? [/quote] Lemme guess anyway: Cor Dekker (Ekseption) - Dutch "classical" prog - often very tacky arrangements of classical themes. Sometimes genius. Bert Ruiter (Focus) - Dutch prog Ron van Eck (Supersister) - Dutch prog akin to Canterbury scene Rinus Gerritsen (Golden Earring) - "Radar Love"! Jannick Top - from French band Magma Bakithi Kumalo - played on Paul Simon's "Graceland" Muzz Skillings - in Living Colour before Doug Wimbish Georg Riedel - a Swede who did a lot of different jazz, often rather soft or quite modern Red Mitchell - an American jazz player. Probably not that known, but very musical I think, and he had an impact on me.

Bo0tsy
I’m sure I’ve seen similar posts to this before, and I haven’t posted for a while, but, here’s an alternative list - if you are truly talking ‘virtuoso’ bassists then you simply gotta’ have some Funk in your life: In no particular order (other than Bootsy No.1 J): Bootsy Collins (James Brown/Parliament/Funkadelic/Bootsy’s Rubber Band) Larry Graham (Sly & the Family Stone/Graham Central Station) Aaron Mills (Cameo/Outkast) Mark Adams (Slave) Stuart Zender or Paul Turner (Jamiroquai – Zender just about pips it) Andrew ‘Love’ Levy (Brand New Heavies) Cordell ‘Boogie’ Mosson (Parliament/Funkadelic) George Porter Jr. (The Meters) Rick James (Late showman and very competent bassist) Joseph ‘Lucky’ Scott – Curtis Mayfield – Hardly well known, but he played some of the greatest soul and funk baselines of all time (Move On Up & Freddie’s Dead etc)

Cor Dekker Bert Ruiter Ron van Eck Rinus Gerritsen John Glascock Muzz Skillings Sean Malone Doug Wimbish My point really was I don't see the point of a load of bassists all listing a load of names, that they either like or don't like - or heard of or not heard of, for that matter. He was on fire with John McLaughlin in the late 80's. My 10 Geddy Lee Stuart Hamm Jonas Hellborg Jaco Pastorius Victor Wooten Bakithi Kumalo Mark King Stanley Clark Thats probably about it. As in, there are many more I dearly love but these guys could be 'favourite' on any given day (though it mostly sways between Geddy Lee and Stuart Hamm at the #1 spot). lojo
I think we should have a bassist of the month thread, within that thread only posts about the current bassist can be made, comments, views, links etc. Have the big names in their such as Jamerson, and less know players who have done great work in the background Over time it will introduce as all to some we dont know, and inform us of those we do ..... Not sure who gets to choose each time, but if I dont get heckled for suggesting this or ignored, Ill start it up and devise a system for having different members naming the playing each time.
