No it ain't  not when I'm just going to advertise one for sale :D it ain't

What I meant to say, was, except the one that KiOgon has, which is arguably the finest looking P I've seen in a long while, and what appears to be extraordinary value at that price too (Even though I haven't seen it, or know how much it is ;) .....hope that's OK??)

(Is this the first ever bump of a bass not even listed yet  )

A 1960 Precision : 3 T sunburst, Tortoise pickguard, rosewood fingerboard....Magic look
A 1958 Precision : 3 T sunburst, Gold Anodized pick, one piece Maple neck...Magic look

I would say : Maple is brighter, rosewood is softer.

Both are beautiful to me.

I will add picts soon

BTW I'm a little unbalanced in terms of Rosewood Vs Maple, only my '51P & '57P (RI's) are Maple but looking around here I can see Seven rosies :o I think I need to sell a couple & redress the balance, (by buying more Maple)

From EvilBay, asking 20 000$... Instruments are made for musicians not for being hung on a wealthy amateur.

Your replica is really cool, Rick. Serious work.

Thanks for the comments on my replica, it's a lovely bass.

What makes you say the first comment, about the wealthy amateur?? ;)

I was lucky enough to play three different sunburst early '70's Ps in Friday.

They were hanging on the wall lined up with two rosewood boards either side of a maple one. All three had tort guards.

To my ears the maple one sounded the nicest but it was the only one strung with flats so that might have had something to do with it.

All three looked great to be honest, the maple was nicely aged ('72) so it didn't have that very light colour lots of modern maple necks have.

I'd happily have any of them really - or even all three as they all had different characteristics yet were only about a year apart in age :)

After much deliberation, I have decided that it has to be RW for me. It just looks 'right' with 3TS and a tort guard. 2012 P-bass here I come? :P haha.

You have chosen most wisely Mr Jackers :)

So you don't think maple fretboards sound brighter?

I think if a string is vibrating heavily less than half an inch away from a piece of wood, which ultimately it is connected to, then some of these vibrations are going to either rebound off the board, or be absorbed by it.

How much of either will depend on the type of material. If it's wood, then there are bound to be variances between different woods, even different pieces of the same type of wood.

That's why custom guitar and bass makers spend a lot of time finding the right tone woods with which to build an instrument.

And maple just looks better.
[/quote]

No arguments about the sound difference, as I've not done a scientific comparison. I also agree that the fingerboard wood will affect tone for the reasons you state. However, rosewood is definitely not softer than maple! I work with both a fair bit, and rosewood blunts my chisels a lot faster than maple!

On the aesthetic side of things, it's a close call, but rosewood is nicer imo
