...am I missing something here....what looks like a post apocalyptic Les Paul copy is valued at the neck end of two grand? Why? I don't profess to ne an expert on Guitar valuation and I may doing the luthier a massive disservice, but that looks a bit like a car boot sale special...YMMV. Quote
waynepunkdude Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 As my missus said, this relicing thing is a fad, in a few years there will be a load of sh*te looking guitars and basses that no one will want to buy. Quote
Rick's Fine '52 Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012
As my missus said, this relicing thing is a fad, in a few years there will be a load of sh*te looking guitars and basses that no one will want to buy.
You may be right, although the Custom Shop have been making them for 19 years now, and now everyone's at it, so it may be the longest running fad ever. It wasn't around in the 60's because they all still looked new, so people didnt know what an aged guitar was, also, they were all affordable, relatively anyway. I think the appeal of a genuinly vintage looking instrument will always be around. I think the appeal of tat like many seen on eBay, as this thread shows, will dwindle rapidly though. As is obvious, I'm a fan of relic guitars, but all mine look right, and you need to take them apart to tell, I think there will always be a market for a good relic, especially as the price of originals is putting this type of guitar out of many players' reach. I think there's a big difference between a sh*te looking guitar, as you say, and a good relic. I hardly see a good relic anywhere, even Fender ones look poor close up, for the money anyway. Quote
tauzero Posted June 16, 2012 Posted June 16, 2012 That Les Paul isn't exactly a relic though, is it? A lot of effort has been put into making it look like it was made out of painted steel and had rusted. Not the same as taking one perfectly serviceable bass in good condition and applying chisel, sander, angle grinder and blowtorch until it's screaming for mercy. Quote
Leon Transaxle Posted June 18, 2012 Posted June 18, 2012 (edited) He's been at a Jazz now too http://www.ebay.co.u...5#ht_531wt_1185 Maybe I just don't get out an play enough but what aspect of bass usage would result in what appears to be damage from large chucks of gravel hitting it at a considerable speed? As should the perpetrator of this abomination. On prime-time TV. In slo-mo. From various angles. Edited June 18, 2012 by discreet Quote
