Mog Posted July 29, 2012 Posted July 29, 2012 IMO the second solo (from 4:35 - 5:27) is one of the finest guitar solo's ever composed. The structure is fantastic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4WEAHRLorM
Black Coffee Posted July 29, 2012 Posted July 29, 2012 Not likely to be on Youtube, but it's Thin Lizzy's Still in love with you from Life - live album. John Sykes I believe playing it. If you haven't heard it, get it and enjoy every note. Every mood in a solo all under one track. Brian Downey, Big Phil and Gary Moore in supporting roles at the scene of the crime - it can't fail at being a gem - really.
Mykesbass Posted July 29, 2012 Posted July 29, 2012 (edited) A certain not so well known Texan wiping the floor with Mr Clapton - OK, so he's a friend of mine and I'm biased but Buddy Whittington is up there with the all time greats: Edited July 29, 2012 by Mykesbass
MacDaddy Posted August 3, 2012 Posted August 3, 2012 with a lesson showing how to play it too.
Bilbo Posted August 3, 2012 Posted August 3, 2012 +1 for Ladies Night In Buffalo but, for me, the most emotionally satisfying guitar solo ever (today) is The Un-Merry Go Round by Allan Holsdworth, The tune is over 14 minutes long and there are all sorts of 'sections but the bit that bleeds is from 9.42. You need to start listening at around the 6.00 minute mark in order for the solo to make sense. Another favourtie of mine is Carlos Rios' solo on Chick Corea's Cool Weasel Boogie off the first Elektric Band lp. It isn't on youtube so you'll have to look it up on Spotify.... solo starts at about 3.06.
pst62 Posted August 3, 2012 Posted August 3, 2012 Michael Schenker. Great solo/ending to an album.
Bilbo Posted August 3, 2012 Posted August 3, 2012 And, of course, this monster from Metheny (solo starts with the greatest 'wow' moment in jazz guitar history...at 1.36) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSmWCYNRpNs

I need to have a think about my favourite solo but it's gonna be something from 80's LA/NY hair metal era
MoonBassAlpha Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 Another from Mr Holdsworth. This is concise, and the phrasing is just great. Starts around 2.47 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMu7XUc9OcI
franzbassist Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 Cold Chisel's Ian Moss does the business on this track by the Black Sorrows. Great song, band, and solo. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgRPaQoawIs

We'd never heard of em but a lecturer told us to learn it as like a challenge. We nailed it. Loved it
Lord Sausage Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 Don't know who it is but it is sublime, beautiful. The whole guitar part... the song too! http://youtu.be/Yt2O4Y_sQ98
JeSuisSkeleton Posted October 27, 2012 Posted October 27, 2012 I really like John Frusciante's solos, especially on Stadium Arcadium. This is one of my favourites (2:47) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_mcplFhU6c Less is more!
Ancient Mariner Posted October 28, 2012 Posted October 28, 2012 (edited)
how about the worst guitar solo ever? kicks in about 1.20
About par for the course for some 'progressive' bands of the time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMzoqpyUbhg I can tell you've never heard a Beastie Boys song. mentalextra Posted October 28, 2012 Posted October 28, 2012 I always loved the way the guitar in this track helped give it a sinister feel and moved it away from just another dance track. Great little solo by Eddie too, not the greatest but it all fits so nicely. I heard this track in the car a few days ago and thought it does sound good
anthomp Posted October 28, 2012 Posted October 28, 2012 (edited) always be my favourite intro, solo, outro too tone like no other Brit could hope to muster you know who i'm talking about ! Edited October 28, 2012 by anthomp

leftybassman392 Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 (edited) Blimey! Where do you begin with this topic? Are we talking pyrotechnics? Musicality? Taste? Style? In the absence of governing criteria and being an old Rock/Blues fart at heart I'm going to pick a Hendrix song - All Along The Watchtower (several solos; take your pick) - and yes I do know it's actually a Dylan song, but if you love guitar then which version would rather listen to? In 45 years I've never tired of listening to it and still stop what I'm doing whenever I hear it. Edited October 29, 2012 by leftybassman392
Bilbo Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 I think the criterion is whether you like it more than all the others you have heard
