Schnozzalee Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 (edited) My Dad's kindly given me his 40 year old Valencian Spanish Classical Guitar but the plastic was so brittle on the tuning heads that one's come apart in my hand! The tuning pegs are top quality so i'd rather replace the plastic head than the machines themselves. Can I buy replacements or put something together makeshift in the meantime? I've never played an acoustic instrument... Edited June 17, 2012 by Schnozzalee Quote
Schnozzalee Posted June 17, 2012 Author Posted June 17, 2012
is the pin that the peg was on, solid?
Yeah it's in fantastic nick other than the white plastic oval pegs, I reckon the rest will disintegrate from age too! Quote
jaydentaku Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 you can't (from my experience) get the actual plastic key/peg/tuner separately. You can of course get replacement machine heads, in strips of three or singularly, depending on the design. If you want to botch the job, then I suggest Sugru. It may work, but given the nature of a tuning key, it may require something more robust. If you are not familiar, sugru is a air curing material that you shape to your requirements. If you search google for machine heads, it throws up many VERY cheap sets on ebay. Personally I would avoid these. I use Gotoh, but they are high end and may cost more than the value of the guitar. Schaller are good quality and cheaper. Quote
Schnozzalee Posted June 17, 2012 Author Posted June 17, 2012 Thanks! I've never heard of Sugru but i'll definitely look into it! I'll probably buy the Gotoh's/Schallers if the worst comes to the worst due to the quality of the guitar/sentimental value; will be a pity to lose the Spanish engravings and stuff though - it seems we've found a hole in the market . Thanks again! Quote
jaydentaku Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 well, if you really want to treat the guitar, you could try these, http://www.rodgers-tuning-machines.co.uk/ . They are hand made and English. But yeah, you can't beat spanish handmade/engraved. Mine are and they are gold. I dislike god on anything electric, but it seems right on a classical. A little flare seems right. My tutor, when I was young, had a flamenco. Each peg had a single diamond. Quote

BassTractor Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 Hahaha. How does one find a pic like that? I mean it can't be digital, can it? They didn't have that in 1870, did they? Hm. Complicated Quote
KingBollock Posted June 18, 2012 Posted June 18, 2012 Pop into your local Guitar shop, they will probably have a an old Ice Cream tub full of things like that, the trouble is getting matching ones. I was able to get a single replacement when I busted one on a Banjo years ago. Quote

xilddx Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 This guy comes well recommended by some friends of mine. I got two bone saddles recently and they were well priced and arrived very quickly. You can also call him for advice. http://www.luthierssupplies.co.uk/ Personally, I'd replace the whole set, both sides. Quote

Only problem is, as I was cleaning, lemon oiling and polishing the guitar last night I noticed the plastic capstan crumbling too!! Damn you plastic fatigue . Thanks for the links guys, i'm gonna pull trigger on some tuners today! Quote
