Fuzz Pedal (Nirvana to Muse)

Hi Guys,

I'm after a bass fuzz pedal that will put me in the nirvana/muse ballpark.. I love Krist's tone on "Breed" and he used a ProCo Rat on that but I'm not sure about about anything else..

Any decent fuzz boxes that would get me the sound?

ProCo Rat is a decent pedal, or the Turbo Rat with a few tweaks

I use a bass big muff. No loss of low end on the 'dry' setting.

Maybe WMD Geiger Counter (either normal or Civilian Issue)? It's OD, but it delivers nice fuzzy tones.

The GC is more of a very aggressive distortion circuit... I've been using for ages and the muse stuff it can do well... Bit I don't think it does less aggressive OD sounds well.

It's strengths are in the super high gain and bit/sample rate reductions.

Something like the Mastotron may suit your needs as its a jack of all trades it goes from fat muff-like sounds to synthy gated mammoth sounds...

I like the RAT a lot. On bass I found that its best when combined with an LS-2 or similar so that you can keep some dry signal too.

Considering the Rat guys, any opinions on the SansAmp Bass DI?

Sansamp is more overdrive than fuzz. The Rat should work well, as well as the Grey Stache from Fuzzrocious.

sansamp a bit 'scooped' for my liking. fuzzrocious also do their version of the 'rat' sound (rat-tail)

Just pulled the trigger on a Rat (the normal version) heard it sucks up low end though.. be ok if I throw an EQ after it right?

I got my Dirty Rat because out of all the dirt boxes I tried that day, it sucked the least bass from the tone. YMMV.

Really like my Tech 21 Red Ripper, has a kind of filter thing on it that reacts beautifully to dynamics.

Any Earthbound Fuzz will do it all...... basically an upgraded muff, but 1000% improved. I use a Beast in my cover band for Hysteria and Breed to great effect.
