uke Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 Been watching quite a bit of Punk Britania recently, and bassists in general then, either used a Precision or a Rickenbacker, ( Obviously with some exceptions! ) What do you think was the best Punk bass ? For me It's a Precision though an old Marshall/Hiwatt head and 4x12 or 2x15 taken just up to breaking point! Quote
LiamPodmore Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 I play pop/punk (Though there is some classic punk stuff in there too) and a P fits perfectly. Slightly overdriven of course. Liam Quote
waynepunkdude Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 Depends if you're talking about middle age punk or modern punk. Quote
uke Posted June 19, 2012 Author Posted June 19, 2012 (edited)
Stingray through an Ampeg SVT.
I agree with you, and would use that now, but they weren't too readily available in the late 70's (to skint British punks!) Edited June 19, 2012 by uke Quote
waynepunkdude Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 They should have got a bloody hair cut and a job then Quote
longtimefred Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 My Sandberg!! Perfect mix of the 2 perfect basses for playing punk music (P and ray obviously) Quote
uke Posted June 19, 2012 Author Posted June 19, 2012 Think we're all missing the point "what do you think "WAS" the best punk bass?" Quote
Bassmonkey Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 There were loads of Ricky's the other night, Simenon, Foxton, Undertones plus a few Ps. Those crazy kids ! Quote
Lozz196 Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 (edited) Bearing in mind punk was largely quite tinny/trebly, with a lot of quick "look at me riffs", and going from what has been shown on Punk Brittannia, looks like the Ricks were the main bass. I think most people associate the Precision due to Vicious Sidney, and perhaps, Paul Simenons cover shot on London Calling. Edited June 19, 2012 by Lozz196 Quote
mrdreadful Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 The definitive punk bass is whatever you can nick from the back of some prog band's tour van. Quote

Spike Vincent Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 An interesting question. My memories ( admittedly after decades of ermmm recreational brain destruction) were always of P basses, but as pointed out, there were a LOT of Ricks on Punk Brittannia.Personally,JJ Burnel's sound, and that of Algy Ward define Punk, both P bass users.I use 78 P basses nowadays, but also a Rick copy.. BigRedX Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 But all the footage of The Damned when Captain Sensible was the bassist show him playing a Hofner-style violin bass. Quote
Spike Vincent Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 Indeed, but that wasn't the Definitive Damned sound. Quote

It's Machine Gun Etiquette & the Black Album for me, they beat all that Brian James penned drivel on so many levels! Quote
surfinbernard Posted June 24, 2012 Posted June 24, 2012 The most obvious iconic one is Sid's white P bass of course, the irony being that he couldn't play it really. Quote
