Roland Rock
I'm interested in finding out about these basses. I know that they're Japanese and made in the 70s and 80s, but I can't see many details on the web. I know at least one BCer has a "Maya" bass. and here is an example of an "El Maya" bass What's the difference between these two? Different people say different things. The EBay seller says that El Maya is the high end marque for the company, but other sources say that one was the export and one was the non-export version Any experiences, reviews and information would be gratefully consumed. Musky
According to Jon (who I'd trust on these matters far more than most) El Maya was indeed the upmarket version. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/7473-japcrap-spotting/page__st__1140__p__739236#entry739236
Roland Rock
Cheers. It's hard to know who is reliable and who is talking bollocks on the web sometimes. So the eBay seller seems to be correct in their description. I'd love to try out an El Maya bass. Anyone got one?
Ancient Mariner
I bought an El Maya guitar, new, in about 1981. List price then was £250, and to put that in context, about the same as a US strat. It was beautifully made, sounded fantastic, and had to be sold because we simply needed the money a couple of years later. I'd love another if I could afford it (and find one the same). Yes, they were definitely high end.
Roland Rock
Thanks. The ebay one could be a great bass for the money. I'm too cautious to buy before playing it though. Also - £60 for postage, is that normal from France? Edited June 22, 2012 by Roland Rock
Ancient Mariner
It's in the EU, but that might not make a difference. Some years back I shipped a guitar to Norway and IIRC it cost around that. About the same time I shipped a guitar back from the US and it cost about £95.
pete.young
Thanks. The ebay one could be a great bass for the money.
I think £500 is on the high side - in these troubled times you might pick up a not-for-export MIJ/CIJ Fender for that sort of money. BetaFunk
Some El Maya badged guitars were made by Chushin Gakki who at one time made Fresher, Charvels and Jacksons. Edited August 28, 2013 by BetaFunk
