Hi all

I very nearly got scammed. A woman is selling a white usa p bass 57 reissue in cambridge on gumtree for £430. Alarm bells should of been ringing at the price but i thought someone might be desparate for cash.

Anyway, i contacted her and she wouldnt meet up at hers or mine. She also reckoned it was a 62 but it had the anodised scrateplate and mapel fret of a 57. I questioned this and she said "oh yeah, my husband got it wrong".

She then reckoned as a work perk she could send stuff via parcelforce free of charge and i could pay the driver cash if i liked it, or send it back. Weird? but i didnt have anything to lose at this point.

I then got a email from "parcelforce" saying to go to a local shop which uses paypoint and give them the ref number after paying the £430. I emailed her back telling her to get stuffed as this sounded clearly dogey and i would drive to her house and play this bass and give her cash - called her bluff. No response. I emailed saying i have forwarded her details to the police and the bass has now been withdrawn from gumtree.

I googled it and others have had similar experiences with exactly the same story.

Really naffed me off as people more gulliable would of been scammed. And if the bass was real it would of been killer!!!!!!

Yes I've heard it's been tried a few times. My philosophy is if it'stoo good to be true, it probably is...............so keep your guard up.

I saw this bass and didn't even bother checking my bank account as I knew it would've gone (or so I thought).
Would've looked lovely next to my black/maple 50s RI!

I've experienced similar, where payment was expected first, when I saw a Yamaha JP 6 string signature for 95 quid!

But generally I've had good experiences with Gumtree.

and a substitute of "would've" for "would of" would have been awesome ;) /pedantry

Gumtree is meant to be local/ face to face, no BS. If it's not, be suspicious . I've had really good experience both buying and selling from and to genuine people. D

Also normally had good experience with Gumtree.... but have always done business face to face as a buyer or a seller and kept a wide berth of anything that didn't seem right.

Well done to OP for outing the scammers and thanks for the heads up.

Yeah, there are some dodgy scams on there. Saying that, there are some great bargains.

Such as - my Fender Custom Shop Nocaster Relic. Less than a year old when I bought it via Gumtree. All the goodies in the case. Actually, it came with the two cases - the black moulded fender case, and the retro, tweed shaped "thermometer" case.

Cost? £750!!!!!!! Result!!!!

the same thing happened to me this week with an EBS HD350 on gumtree, luckily i spotted the dodgyness and reported it.
watch out this seems to be quite a common thing at the mo.

Funny enough the EBS was on last Friday and is located the next street down(So they say!)from my drummer friend so I asked if he could collect it but alas no reply, I think they are after a mail order sucker..
