sarah thomas
What with all these sets of strings whizzing around the country begging to be tried out, can anyone recommend a string winder?
daflewis
i was just going to do that in reply to the revs last post - it's a dunlop which attaches to a drill/screwdriver.... give me an hour or so... (i have three of them!) Edited June 26, 2012 by daflewis
daflewis
Sorry, I failed! It's a dunlop "turbotune" and it has the option of either hand winding or attaching to a drill (so much easier!!)... but... They don't seem to be available in the uk! I admit I did get my three from Golihur music a couple of years ago and had to swallow the postage cost from the states, but I thought they'd be available here by now. As you can imagine, with all the string testing I do, I'm changing sets of strings a couple of times a week sometimes and I've found them well worth the money. TheRev
I was having the same train of thought yesterday.... two basses + three sets of strings to swap around = achy fingers. I'm in the middle of putting together a Thomann order and thought about getting one of those plastic handle string winder jobbies. Then I recalled reading about the winder that you attach to an electric screwdriver but all I came up with was this: http://www.thomann.de/gb/hanika_motor_stringwinder.htm Which looks like it only caters for those silly little short scale six string piccolo basses, never mind full size bass guitars or proper basses. Perhaps I'll just man up, take the pain and remeber the ache every time I think about trying a different type of string.
sarah thomas
Are the plastic jobbies no good?
apa
Ive got the standard Planet Waves one. Its not the most robust of things but hasnt broken yet! I dont think it will last a lifetime but they arent too expensive. The string cutter is very handy. A
daflewis
Personally I find that, because of the extra resistance on a double bass, the "manual" ones are more trouble than they're worth... Edited June 26, 2012 by daflewis
daflewis
If there are a few people after them, it might be worth getting together and ordering a few from Golihur (or wherever)... Or actually, perhaps I should think about putting one in with each set of test strings!
chrisd24
I have this one at the bottom of the page, fits over the bigger db tuners a treat and even better with the drill attachment! http://www.stringexpress.co.uk/accessories/picks.htm
daflewis
Yeh! That's the one! well, a different make perhaps, but the same idea as mine - nice one Chris!
sarah thomas
Thanks Daf and Chris. I've just ordered one (you have to put in the quantity required before clicking add to cart - that had me foxed for a while). £5.95 including UK postage beats all that twisting and turning. daflewis
And it sure beats what I paid - I think they worked out about fifteen quid each with postage! (but still worth it for the amount I use them)
