Final Loan
Hiya, I'm after a new bass and I'd really like a semi acoustic. I've had a look at the Italia ones (and they seem alright) but I'd really rather get one that's got a 335-esque body. And I'd much prefer a 34" scale neck too. Does anybody know of anything that fits that description that won't financially cripple me?
neepheid
One man's "financially crippling" is another man's loose change. Can you give us an idea of budget?
Final Loan
£350 at the most, really. Cheaper preferably (obviously).
neepheid
Hmm, my first thought for an 335esque was an Epiphone Jack Casady, but the cheapest I can see it is 400. You might be able to pick one up on evilBay for less.
Musky
An Eastwood Classic will set you back about £350. It's a bit more Gretsch inspired though...
queenofthedepths
I tried one of these out for a couple of hours and it's pretty nice - thought of getting one myself http://www.imuso.co.uk/ProductDetail.asp?StockCode=EG01708 They DO do them a bit more like the 335: http://www.zzounds.com/item--IBAASB140 but I can't find anywhere those ones are for sale... Final Loan
Good suggestions. More please?
Hutton
I would recommend that, if possible, you try out a semi-acoustic bass before you buy. I am a precision player but recently bought a Gretsch G6072 which has a 34" scale. Although the same as the precision it felt as though I needed an extra inch or two on my left arm. This was all down to playing position. You have to tilt the semi neck up more to achieve the same feeling of length of neck. Once you have made the adjustment everything is fine. Musky
Harley Benton used to do basses that were identical to those Artcores, only cheaper. More than likely from the same factory. Aria did something similar, but I can't for the life of me think of the model. And of course there's the Epi Rivoli, now discontinued but come up on ebay for the kind of money you're looking at. BigRedX
The Eastwoods are all short scale (30-30 1/2") except the EEB-1 and EUB-1. You could have a look at DiPinto but at around £400 + import costs from the US that's outside your budget. IMO your best bet would be a second hand Epiphone Jack Casady. There's a black one on eBay at the moment still under £300.
Jono Bolton
Where abouts in the country are you? If you can get to Glasgow easily (not counting on it) there's a very nice DeArmond bass in the dreaded 'Guitar Store', a place for thieving gypos to flog on their stolen goods quickly with no questions asked. Er, allegedly. It was £250, a Starfire I think but I may be (read: probably am) wrong. I'll try and find out what it was. Edit: Checked the website, it's definitely a Starfire. Didn't get a shot on it but it sure was pretty, and that's the most important thing about semis, right? Keep an eye on it and bid what you fancy. Maybe you won't trigger the reserve, but if you don't he might still sell you it on the Second Chance Offer.
Oooh! I'm not very good with my different types of sunburst, but I'd say it was more 'vintage' as opposed to a Fender style. If I remember correctly it was more brown towards the edge than black. Deep Thought
I had one of the Ibanez AGB200's. Beautiful thing to look at, but it's 30" scale, and I just couldn't get on with it. Couldn't stop the frets buzzing on the E string no matter what I did. It lasted about 3 weeks-all I wanted to do was play my Precision, so back to the shop it went.
