jonbd
I'm on the lookout for a bass amp and was hoping I could get some recomendations. I have a £350 budget for a giggable lightweight combo. I play modern rock type music. I was looking at the TC Electronics BG250 and it seems to fit the bill, but I can't find it in stock anywhere! Are there any other comparable amps in the same price bracket? Are there any decent heads and cabs in that price range that aren't too heavy to lug around? The last time I had a bass amp was about 10 years ago so i'm well out of touch unfortunately! Cheers Jon
phatbass787
This seems one of the bargains of the year think there's a new version or something hence crazy price, great little combo and unbeatable at his price plus Ashdown have 5 year warranty now... http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/product/37170-ashdown-electric-blue-12-180-evo-ii-combo.html#sterling_uk
Lozz196
For £350 you`ll get a giggable setup on here, 2nd hand, however I don`t know about as light as the TC. If you`re in a band, my recommendation would be to go no lower on this for the power. There are the new Ibanez P3115 amps - I`ve no experience of them, but the link below gives details: http://www.guitar.co.uk/amplifiers/bass/4338-ibanez_p3115_promethean
chrismuzz
Ashdown aren't light, but if I was in the market for something around your price range that's what I'd go for!
jonbd
Thanks guys! I'll have do some research on those amps and see whats what!
Mornats
Also check out the Ashdown Touring that's being massively discounted at the moment: http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/product/53542-ashdown-220-touring-112-bass-combo-amp.html (£50 cheaper than when I bought it a month ago!). Lovely tone from the valve pre-amp but it's 25kg.
Muzz
There's a Roland D-Bass 115 for sale on here at the mo which is in your budget, they're a great combo, definitely giggable, and not too heavy either. The ad's nowt to do with me, but I had one (and the 115 powered extension for a stacktastic setup) for a while, and it's a very underrated amp. Mine was nicked, I might still have had it had this not happened. Edited July 6, 2012 by Muzz
Conan
Not sure exactly what YOU mean by "lightweight", but at your budget you'd be limiting yourself by insisting on the low mass option... If it has to be a combo (and I'm not sure it does), then you can't go far wrong with Trace Elliot. They get a hard time on here for reasons that I don't fully comprehend - but they are a lot of amp for the money. Take this one for example... http://basschat.co.u...liot-715-combo/ No? Then there are loads of other classy options here: http://basschat.co.uk/forum/20-for-sale-amps-and-cabs/ Edited July 6, 2012 by Conan
jonbd
Thanks for the suggestions, lots of options out there. Looks like i've got my work cut out! What I mean by lightweight is small enough to fit in the boot of my ford focus and lighter than the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe i've been lugging around for the last few years (about 20kgish). JTUK
Me too... bomber amps and cabs which will run forever..which is admireable. I just think other amps sound better, but if bang for buck ( cheap ) was the deal, then they would be right near the top on my list. 20kgs for a combo..??? isn't going to happen easily if you play hard. I suspect we will be seeing the lighter end of kit come back to haunt us in some respects... if that experience in P.A's is repeated. If you drive something hard and long you need a big engine that can do that all the time...if you are peaking out all the time, then something is more likely to break more quickly.. jonbd
Well so far i've been very impressed by the amp! It's very loud for it's size and I had no problem being heard in a loud practice. Still yet to use it in a gig situation though! The toneprint stuff is pretty good, but annoying that I have to either connect it to a PC or use my phone to change presets. There is an on/off switch for that so i'll probably choose either a distortion or compression setting and leave it at that. The built in tuner works well. RandomBass
Looking forward to reading your thoughts as you use it more, especially in a gig situation. Where did you get it from in the end? Cheers Geoff
jonbd
Got it from Gear4Music in the end and it turned up next day which was nice. Itching to test it out at a gig! Might get a chance this Saturday, depending on what gear is already at the venue.
