d_g Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 Strange question but I've seen them blurred out in different adverts etc. I'm selling my Lakland to someone and they have asked for the serial number, just wondered if there is any reason I shouldn't give it to them? Cheers! Dan Quote
cloudburst Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 (edited) Assuming you know your bass and the serial number doesn't turn up anything random like it's been previously stolen at some time or that it's a different year than you think, then I'd see it as follows: 1) Provide serial number to buyer. Risk: buyer uses it to clone your bass and this causes confusion in the future. Probability: Low. 2) Refuse to provide serial number to buyer. Risk: you lose the sale. Probability: High. Personally - I'd just give the buyer the serial number if he sounds like he's genuine and interested. CB Edited July 8, 2012 by cloudburst Quote

It's likely to be more of an issue with vintage basses of high value that 'could' be cloned and where the serial number could validate the instrument and authenticate it. Quote
bigthumb Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 It could be something to do with being Korean or Indonesian made (assuming its a Sykline). I'd be a little worried about being asked though... Quote

d_g Posted July 9, 2012 Author Posted July 9, 2012 Cheers guys, I'll give him the serial number as he seems genuine and let you know what happens. Quote

Fuzzbass2000 Posted July 11, 2012 Posted July 11, 2012 What's to stop someone making up a valid number (using the various number checkers available on the net)? Quote
d_g Posted July 11, 2012 Author Posted July 11, 2012 Turns out the guy has changed his mind anyway, so it might be up for sale here pretty soon! Quote
