Pete Academy Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 I've just been watching a Chili's live concert and think that Flea is an amazing player. The way he grooves and fills out the sound for a three-piece is astonishing. Why do people knock him? Quote
stingrayPete1977 Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 Soul to squeeze is one of their least known tracks yet one of if not their best, no slapping walking on hands or anything, just a great groove I was at knebworth and he was more solid than previous times I have seen them also his sound for once was really good, gave me Modulus gas big time! As for knocking him I don't know? Each to their own but do not feed the trolls Quote
xilddx Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 Pete, he's fabulous. It's so churlish to knock him. But that's what people are like mate. Quote
gub Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 Amazing player , if you saw him playing down your local rose and crown you would most likely be lovin his groves , but yes him being popular does seem to make sense , we hate it when our friends become successful ! Quote
Kev Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012
Because he's popular.
Quote

Graham Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 I used have a Stanley Clarke live DVD where he was part of the big School Days jam at the end and was easily one the best there Quote
Pete Academy Posted July 10, 2012 Author Posted July 10, 2012 He"s very inventive and totally original. Just a really great player. Quote
simon1964 Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 (edited)
Soul to squeeze is one of their least known tracks yet one of if not their best, no slapping walking on hands or anything, just a great groove
Agree totally I've never understood the bashing of Flea, and especially the suggestion he is a one trick pony, who's only good at slap. Some of his best lines are totally slap free! Under the Bridge, Scar Tissue, Californication, Soul to Squeeze, are all really tasteful lines . Edited July 10, 2012 by simon1964 Quote
lowdown Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 Flea is a great player and right on it. He does his bit for the kids as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwoRMPqeDwQ&feature=fvst Garry Quote

Jambo10 Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 He is a fantastic player.......It could well be that people knock him because they are jealous of him and wish they could play as good as him! I certainly wish I could! Quote
Gazm Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012
Actually we all secretly love Flea
It's no secret! Was amazing in Brum last November. Quote
Sean Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 He was great in Belgium two weeks ago. I miss John F's vocals but the band was on top form. Quote
gelfin Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 It's probably that British thing. Always knock the good uns cos were jealous. Quote
Cameronj279 Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 I'll be entirely honest here. In most RHCP recordings he comes up with some great so Quote
Cameronj279 Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 I'll be entirely honest here. In most RHCP recordings he comes up with some great sounding lines but for my liking he shows off a fair amount and I've never enjoyed the whole incredibly fast slap thing he does. I'm not knocking him, I'm just not a fan. Quote

ThomBassmonkey Posted July 11, 2012 Posted July 11, 2012 First few live bits I saw (recorded on TV/internet) of him playing "fast" stuff I didn't like. He seemed a bit all over the place and showing off without any kind of groove, then playing much simpler stuff in the actual songs. Since then I've heard more (and seen Chillis live, though Ben Harper blew them out the water, but that's another story) and he's a great bassist that sometimes gets a little excited and loses sight of the groove a little sometimes. I've got a lot of respect for him, though it's getting a bit annoying people asking if he's a big inspiration for me (partially because he's one of the most famous bassists to non-musos and partly because I use a ray into a GK). I think because he's popular people expect more flashiness or something? No idea... Then there's just the people who hate slap Quote

Great player. Great guy. Totally weird - but in a good way. Oh, and I like Mark King too! Edited July 11, 2012 by Conan Quote

What they generally mean is that they don't happen to like the music concerned so they brand the musicians as 'crap'. It's very immature playground stuff. I mean, that Macca eh? How useless is he?
