Beedster
[s]I have something of a problem in that I have a new gig that is going to require travel to That London, and quite possibly overseas, and my nly DB is my lovely old German, ex Keith (Mr Bassman) and Greg Cordez. I had hoped to fund the purchase of an EUB or more portable DB though other means, but it ain't going to happen, so with my new found un-sentimental approach to these things, I'm going to offer the Flatback for sale (£3000) or for PX with a portable DB or EUB, ideally up to no more than £1500 so that I can also fund a new but cheaper DB. I might also consider a PX with cash my way for a cheaper DB allowing me to buy an EUB. In short, I need to get rid of the German and come away with a DB and an EUB or similar.[/s] So, the bass. I bought it after a recording session in which the engineer came clean about my old double bass along the lines "You're not going to get the sound you're after with that bass". 6 weeks later and after Greg had very kindly delivered it to Canterbury, I was back in the same studio with a smiling engineer and a completely different recorded sound, very full and rich with - certainly strung with Evah's - a hint of darkness (I'm going to try it with some Silver Slaps this weekend so will report back on that tone). It has an Eb stop, what feels like a long scale (I'll measure when I get home tonight) and a pretty thin neck, which I'd say compares to other DBs in similar fashion to how Fender Jazz necks compare with Precisions, a small difference to the ruler but a significant difference to the player. I can't say whether that makes the neck any 'faster' or 'easier' as - as is the case with all DBs - there are so many other variables. I would guess that if you have small hands, this is probably an advantage. I'm going to wait for some sunshine to take pics Seriously, I'll do my best tonight but will spend some time Saturday getting some done properly. Greg and Keith were both kind enough to send me sound-clips and vids which, with their permission I'll pass on to any interested parties, and of course, tryouts in Canterbury are welcome. I'm in no great rush with this and recognise that it's a lot of money in cash-stripped times, but I'm hoping that the PX option might work for someone here. Beedster
Duncan and I are talking re the trade above but I think my ideal deal for the German would be cash plus a high/good quality EUB, e.g., Clifton, SLB-200 etc. Or a straight sale of course

LOL, nothing at all Duncan, just making sure that if we don't sort something I don't miss anything else in the meantime. Only reason I mentioned above that the ideal trade is an EUB plus cash is that in my experience EUBs are far less idiosyncratic than DBs, that is if everyone who owns a Clifton rates them highly I'm pretty confident I'll get on with it, or at least that it'll do the job I need. Individual DBs on the other hand vary so much that unless you're very lucky I don't think you know whether you will or will not get on with one without a fair bit of playing, adjustment, string changes etc. Re the Romanian with the tan, knowing you from way back, I'm confident that if you chose it in the first place and have kept it since, it's probably a bloody decent instrument, which in itself removes a lot of the doubt for me. I'll try and get pics of the flatback taken later today Chris Edited July 15, 2012 by Beedster
gcordez
I was the previous owner of the bass. I found it to respond well and speak quite fast. Was clear and even over the entire range, and the neck was really fast. I had some work done on her before selling, a new bridge fitted, fingerboard shoot, and new sound post cut. This all added to the tone and playability of an already nice bass. All in all, a lovely bass for that price. Had to sell it to fund my Martin Penning bass. In a perfect world i would still have it also.
Mr Bassman
I owned this bass for a few years after being repaired and set up up by George Stoppani It was set up for arco, which I was developing in a local orchestra until my unfortunate injury to my left hand about a year ago. I did use it for jazz occasionally and often got nice comments about the sound, especially from vocalists. It's seen some action over it's 100+ years but has mojo and character. If this were up for sale in a shop the asking price could be 5k or more I've got some pics somewhere and I'm happy to answer any questions. Beedster
Thanks guys, I have to say I've had a think over the weekend and I'm really starting to wonder whether, if I have to sell this bass to fund an EUB to travel and gig with the new band, whether the band in question is really what I'm after. This instrument is such a complete joy to play, the tone is simply in a different league to any other DB I've played, that I'm starting to think I'd rather drop the band and keep the instrument than the other way around. Good EUBs can do a decent tone for sure, but even the best is a long way off the sheer pleasure and vibe you get from playing DB. Perhaps I need to find a local quiet band
