RaNoFuNkY
Hi all, was listening to MJ's bad album the other day and was stopped dead by the chorus on the appropriately titled Speed Demon! What a masterpiece- I can't believe I never spotted this til now! Was just wondering if anyone here knows whose majestic thumb is on this record? Sounds like Louis Johnson to me.... Any one had any experience covering this stunner?! Have a gander: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOWkBI8a23A Edited April 25, 2008 by Crazykiwi youtube tags added by kiwi
Kiwi
sounds like a keyboard to me
RaNoFuNkY
Yeah for sure!! But there's something special going on under those keys and afterwards, and if not there could be!! I'm sure the whole song could be adapted and done (by better bassists than me). Would be an absolute belter to do live, just wondered if anybody'd had a go? Cracking groove throughout, spesh the middle 8 - its ace to play to in my room (badly!), what a groove!

RaNoFuNkY
yeah yeah, i know!! Just looking for an inspiring slap groove to learn from and thought this was ace and worth sharing. Regardless of it being played on keys, its still providing the bass line and shouldn't be disregarded just because its played on another instrument. The song has that Louis Johnson feel I reckon, and it's definitely something to try. And with my bedroom walls as my witness I'm guna try and get some parts of this track down!! After all, this is the section for "those who want to push the boundaries a bit". Anybody given it a go?
The Funk
That run after MJ sings each line of "speed demon" on the chorus would be all thumb slapped notes on a bass and be a lot more difficult to play on bass than keyboard. By all means feel free to give it a go but I'm not going to try it! Double thumbing wouldn't give you the sound that's on the record (although it would help with speed). Because of the sound used on the keyboard, you'd have to 'down-thumb' every single note.
Mikey D
I've said about this before as my old bad wanted to do it. I learned the song but THAT run was beyond me, i had the notes in the right order, but definately, definately, not the right speed, although, for a laugh I tried playing it recently now I use the 3/4 finger technique a bit and it sounds quite mad! I would love to play this live. Was it Greg Phillanges (sp?) on keys? Edited April 26, 2008 by Mikey D
matty589
I think it was Greg, and it sounds like it was played live as it slows down slightly in the middle - definitely not quantised. Good luck trying to do it slapped!
Exile252
Aren't majority of MJ songs actually a keyboard instead of a bass? Sill very funky, very very funky. MJ, you may be a crazy foo' but you got some awsome tracks!

I mean it's kool but you could pick that up with a bit of practice.

And just for the record, the original rack is not sequenced. It was played on a keyboard using a slap bass sample sound.
