How to stop flatwound strings breaking

Recommended Posts

Posted

I recently fitted a set of Chromes to my Stingray and they sounded great. I had reason to remove them temporarily but on fitting them back on the bass, the G string broke on the post under the wraps. This is not the first time I've had a flatwound string break in this manner. Never had an issue with removing/refitting roundwound strings. Is there a particular reason why they break on the tuning posts so easily and what is the best way to avoid it?

Compression/separation at the tuning post, particularly where this is of a narrow or tapered design, and age are a few possible reasons, as well as the stresses you put the string through when removing it.
