Guest MoJo Posted July 16, 2012 Share Posted July 16, 2012 I recently fitted a set of Chromes to my Stingray and they sounded great. I had reason to remove them temporarily but on fitting them back on the bass, the G string broke on the post under the wraps. This is not the first time I've had a flatwound string break in this manner. Never had an issue with removing/refitting roundwound strings. Is there a particular reason why they break on the tuning posts so easily and what is the best way to avoid it? Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

lettsguitars Posted July 16, 2012 Share Posted July 16, 2012 If the break angle over the saddle is too steep the outer winding doesn't last long at all. Is the action a bit high? noelk27 Posted July 16, 2012 Share Posted July 16, 2012 Compression/separation at the tuning post, particularly where this is of a narrow or tapered design, and age are a few possible reasons, as well as the stresses you put the string through when removing it.
