kevin_lindsay Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Another Motown Funk Brother has left us. His musical contribution to us all will live on. My thoughts are with his family & friends Quote
Clarky Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Duck Dunn and now Bob Babbitt - the great bassists of the Motown/Staxx/60s studio era are getting very thin on the ground RIP Quote
casapete Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Stevie's 'Signed sealed delivered' is probably my all time favourite bassline. Truly one of the greats, RIP. Quote
seashell Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Oh dear, is that definite? Just did a quick google and couldn't find anything. Quote
mike257 Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 It's confirmed on the forum at his website - sad news indeed. R.I.P. Quote
KevB Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 (edited) Carole Kaye's working her way through the list until there's no one left to contradict her. Seriously, another big loss. I was unaware of a lot of these people other than Jameson until documentaries over the last few years put more of a spotlight on the unsung heroes, Babbit came across as very likeable and genuine.
Yes me too. TG for BBC 4. And sad news indeed. Quote
TheGreek Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 He leaves behind him a catalogue of tunes that anybody would be proud of. Terrible shame that he will be remembered mostly by bassists and that he is not a household name like some lesser musicians..RIP Bob.. Quote
discreet Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 I can't believe it. He was inspirational and played on so many big hits. Sad day. Quote
Clarky Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 You wait, Fender will now hurriedly release the Bob Babitt signature P bass (with flick on/off bridge mute assembly) that they sat on for a couple of years .... Quote
Marvin Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JcQX3fckQzo&feature=related From his website: Bob Babbitt was never just any bass player. Sums it up for me. Quote
Noisyjon Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Sad news indeed. Babbitt & Lord on the same day Quote

slobluesine Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 ah crap those great grooves will always be there tho, loved his motown playing... Quote
essexbasscat Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Ah, that's really sad to hear. Bob played one of my favourite bass lines - Midnight Train to Georgia, so melodic. A real loss. Jon Lord too. This year is going to be memorable for all the wrong reasons. Quote
geoffbassist Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Very sad. He seems like such an amazing person in the Standing in the Shadows of Motown film. RIP Bob. Quote
D.I. Joe Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Sad day for music, two greats gone - and Duck Dunn recently too I wonder if there are any musicians in the current generation that will be held in such high regard when they pass? I highly doubt it. These guys were pioneers, the likes of which will never be seen again. Quote
jdizzle Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 (edited) One of my all time favourite players and a very sad loss indeed. One of the most touching and poignant moments in the Standing in the Shadows doc is his conversation with Me'Shell NDegeocello about the love and acceptance he found amongst the other musicians at Motown. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a clip so I'll just include another great scene and performance from the doc: And one of Babitt's playing highlights with bass solo; Scorpio J.
