cameltoe
Right guys, for a while now I thought I was imagining this, but at rehearsal last night it was obvious I haven't been. My bass terror has been quieter than normal. I first noticed at a gig about 6 months ago, it didn't have the clout it normally had, and I had to turn up more than normal. I figured it was the room or something. Anyway, about halfway through the gig, it suddenly jumped up in volume, and was back to normal. This has happened a few times now, but most of the time it stays a bit quiet, and the volume jump doesn't happen. It doesn't have the same punch as normal, and the note definition is quite bad. It seems to become boomy and less defined, requiring more volume, although no matter how loud I go I struggle to hear my actual notes, it just seems like I'm moving more air. Last night it started off like this, as normal, but the volume jump occured about half way through the rehearsal after we'd had a break. When I came back it was way louder and sounded far better. I could hear what I was playing. Everybody noticed it, so I know it wasn't my imagination! It's happened with 3 different basses now, so it's not that, and the active/passive swtich appears to be working as normal. I replaced the preamp valves with Tung-Sols not long before this started happening. Could it be linked?
Mr. Foxen
Dying valve can do that. Swap them back, see what it does. Might have also cracked the solder round the valve bases when wiggling them out, can't recall if they are board mount.
