the hand of john curley
He MUST be aware of the basschat community's discussions of him?! Dave Vader
what kind of "guitar-improver" can't put a new fret on... (come to think of it what kind of guitar player thinks you'd only use one string on one of your frets?)
Commando Jack
That 20th fret wire is shocking. Even if it was better to put it down there, why would he not push it down flush. Bad idea, badly executed!

He seems to think all touchboards are concave (curve inwards) and not convex (curve outwards). Possibly difficult to seat fret wire when you don't understand curvature. It really is bewildering that people are convinced by the waffle in his descriptions. Or aren't put off by the fact a repairer doesn't know how to use the word "relief". yorks5stringer
What's a "Paul" guitar? I don't think he is being economical with his terminology, just numb? Also his explanation of the neck joint sounded a bit woolly to me. Unless it is a neck through design, every guitar has a glued in neck if it is not bolt on... PS Anyone for a "Lee" or "Miller" Jazz Bass? Edited July 25, 2012 by yorks5stringer
the hand of john curley
So.....looking at his "strat" replica.... "The jack socket only worked intermittently, but it needed me to increase the internal routing and find a shorter socket plate screw because it was coming through and poking the tip of the jack plug."......so you basically put a smaller screw in??????? "I polished all the fret-wires with wire wool, and re cut the zero fret nut grooves to give light easy chord playing in the first few frets. The truss rod operated well, and with that and some bridge adjustment it I have optimised the playing action.".......What??? so you can't play chords after the 5th fret?, ah well he's optimised the playing action so thats ok! What an utter cock.

the hand of john curley
Does anyone remember a guy from eBay a while back called Dave who went under a name like Harley Benton guitars or some such? Well he used to do basses up and flog them but they were really good. He made me a jaco copy years ago, defretted neck, beautifully filled in, great neck, real pleasure to play and still gets good comments now! Cost? £125.!!!!! I can't believe this M D Phillips guy gets away with the money he charges for utter sh*te! Forget my previous "cock" comment.....he's an utter ****! cloudburst
Guys, in all seriousness, this chap is a real easy target. It would be easy for us to be drawn into being Internet bullies. Hows about we set an example as the professionals we are and merely state the facts to help fellow musicians avoid making a bad purchase (which is what I think we all want to do). And that's no disrespect to any of the funny comments. CB Edited July 25, 2012 by cloudburst

First rule in guitar repair club is learn the terminology. It's a nut, not a zero fret. It's relief, not concavity. It's plywood, not mahogany. He probably worked it out as he rubbed out the logo from the t/r cover. Giving him the benefit of the doubt that it was removed prior to him getting his murdering mits on it, why has he completely glossed over the light wood (maple ??) slice in the middle of the mahogany sandwich body. Normally he'd be all over a feature like that... but not this time. To recognisable a feature? Edited July 25, 2012 by Ou7shined
